al-Butula wa al-Fida inda al-Sufiyya is Asad al-Khatib's contemporary study of the themes of heroism (butula) and sacrifice (fida) in the lived tradition of Sunni Sufism. Where Orientalist and modernist literature has often portrayed the Sufis as quietists withdrawn from history, al-Khatib documents the contrary: from the early Sufi-mujahidin who fought on the frontiers of Islamic expansion, through the Sufi orders that organised resistance to Crusader and Mongol invasions, to the modern Sufi leaders who led popular resistance to colonial conquest, the Sufi tradition has been at the centre of Muslim historical agency. The work draws extensively on classical Sufi biographies and historical chronicles.

About The Author

Asad al-Khatib is a contemporary Damascene Sunni writer whose works focus on the recovery of Sufi historical memory and the engagement of the Sunni-Sufi tradition with contemporary questions. His other works include studies of the Damascene Sufi past and biographies of contemporary masters.

"البطولة والفداء عند الصوفية" دراسةُ الكاتب الدمشقي المعاصر أسعد الخطيب في موضوعَي البطولة والفداء في تاريخ التصوّف السنّي الحيّ. حيث صَوَّرت كثيرٌ من الكتابات الاستشراقية والحداثية الصوفيةَ صنفاً من الانعزاليين عن التاريخ، يُوَثِّق الخطيبُ النقيضَ: من المجاهدين الصوفيين الأوائل على ثغور الفتوح، إلى الطرق الصوفية التي قادت المقاومة للحملات الصليبية والمغولية، إلى أئمّة الصوفية المحدَثين الذين قادوا المقاومة الشعبية للاستعمار. يستمدّ الكتابُ من سِيَر الصوفية الكلاسيكية ومن المصادر التاريخية.

أسعد الخطيب كاتبٌ سنّيٌّ دمشقيٌّ معاصر تتمحور مؤلَّفاته حول استرداد الذاكرة التاريخية للصوفية ومُحَاوَرة التراث السنّي الصوفي للمسائل المعاصرة.
