al-Fatawa al-Hadithiyya is Imam Ibn Hajar al-Haytami's three-volume collection of his legal opinions — a major reference of late Shafi'i jurisprudence. The fatawa span the full range of questions a leading mufti of late-Mamluk and early-Ottoman Mecca received: questions of worship (prayer, fasting, hajj), of family law (marriage, divorce, inheritance), of contemporary social and economic life, of devotional practice (including the questions of mawlid, istighatha, and zawiyas that were beginning to be contested), and the broader range of nawazil (novel circumstances) that the mufti must address. The work is among the most cited references in late Shafi'i fiqh.

About The Author

Imam Shihab al-Din Ahmad b. Muhammad Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (909-974 AH / 1504-1567 CE) was the chief Shafi'i jurist of his age, resident in Mecca where he served as mufti. His Tuhfat al-Muhtaj — a 10-volume commentary on al-Nawawi's Minhaj — is one of the four canonical late-Shafi'i commentaries on the Minhaj. His al-Sawaiq al-Muhriqa is a major defense of Sunni positions on the Companions.

"الفتاوى الحديثية" مَجْمَع الإمام ابن حجر الهيتمي في ثلاثة مجلّدات من فتاواه — مرجعٌ كبير لفقه الشافعية المتأخّر. تَستوعب الفتاوى المسائلَ التي يَتَلَقَّاها مفتي الشافعية الأكبر في مكّة المكرّمة في عصر المماليك المتأخّر والعثمانيين المبكر: مسائل العبادات، والأنكحة والمواريث، والحياة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية المعاصرة، والممارسات الدعوية (بما فيها المولد والاستغاثة والزوايا التي كانت بدأت تَتَعَرَّض للنقد)، والنوازل المستجدّة التي يَلْزَم المفتي مُعالجتها.

عن المؤلف

الإمام شهاب الدين أحمد بن محمد ابن حجر الهيتمي (٩٠٩-٩٧٤ هـ) إمامُ الشافعية في عصره، ومُفتي مكّة المكرّمة. له "تحفة المحتاج" شرحاً على "منهاج الطالبين" للنووي في عشرة مجلّدات — أحد الشروح الأربعة المعتمدة للمنهاج عند الشافعية المتأخّرة. وله "الصواعق المحرقة" دفاعاً عن مَوْقف السنّة في الصحابة.
