About the illustrator

Demi: Demi (born Charlotte Dumaresq Hunt, b. 1942 CE, in Cambridge, Massachusetts) is one of America's most prolific children's book authors and illustrators, with more than three hundred titles to her name. She earned her nickname in childhood and has used it throughout a long career devoted to introducing young readers to the spiritual and cultural traditions of the world. She studied art at the Instituto Allende in Mexico and with Sister Corita at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, and held a Fulbright scholarship at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, India. Her travels across Asia and the Muslim world shaped a distinctive illustration style, rich with gold leaf and detail drawn from Persian, Indian, and Chinese miniature painting. Demi has written and illustrated picture-book biographies of many great figures, among them Muhammad, named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book, the poet and mystic Rumi, and Mahatma Gandhi.
