al-Iman Fitra is Dr. Umar Faruq Abd Allah's major Arabic-language theological treatise on the doctrine of fitra — the innate, God-given inclination toward belief that the Prophet (peace be upon him) named in his celebrated saying, "Every newborn is born upon the natural disposition." Across 644 carefully argued pages, the author sets the Qur'anic and Sunnic teaching of fitra against the testimony of the world's primitive and civilised cultures, ancient and modern. He draws on biblical scholarship, ancient Indian, Chinese, and Greek philosophy, comparative religion, anthropology, and the modern history of skepticism and atheism, asking whether the natural human disposition itself recognises the One God — and answering, in the framing of the Qur'an, in the affirmative.

The work is at once a study in Islamic aqida, a work in the philosophy of religion, and a sustained engagement with the secular skepticism of modernity. It has been received as a significant contemporary contribution to Sunni theological writing in Arabic, of particular value to students of comparative religion, philosophy of religion, and the intellectual response to modern atheism.

About The Author

Dr. Umar Faruq Abd Allah Wymann-Landgraf (b. 1948 in Columbus, Nebraska) is an American Muslim scholar who embraced Islam in 1970 and went on to study the classical Islamic disciplines in the line of traditional Sunni scholarship — including study with Sayyid Muhammad b. Alawi al-Maliki in Mecca. He directs the Nawawi Foundation in Chicago and has written widely on traditional Sunni theology, Islamic intellectual history, and the encounter between Islamic and Western thought; his work has been particularly influential in shaping contemporary Western Muslim theological discourse.

عن المؤلف

الدكتور عمر الفاروق عبد الله ويمان لاندغراف (ولد ١٩٤٨م بكولومبس بنبراسكا) عالم مسلم أمريكي أسلم سنة ١٩٧٠م، ودرس على شيوخ السلسلة السنية التقليدية، ومنهم السيد محمد بن علوي المالكي بمكّة المكرّمة. يُدير مؤسّسة النووي في شيكاغو، وله مؤلَّفات عدّة في علم الكلام السنّي وفي تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي، أسهمت في تشكيل خطاب المسلمين في الغرب.
