Description

This compendium brings together three foundational works on the Khasa'is—the distinctive traits of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ—rendered into English for readers who have long lacked full access to this genre in their own language. At its heart are two major treatises, including Bidayat al-Sul fi Tafdhil al-Rasul by Ibn Abd al-Salam, joined by a smaller supplemental work, al-Khasais al-Sughra, authored by Imam al-Suyuti. Together they explore what set the Prophet ﷺ apart and the honor of his nation, offering a focused study of a subject that has occupied scholars across centuries.

The translation is the work of Moustafa Elqabbany and Ahmad Derrick Peat, with a foreword by Sheikh Yasir Fahmy. Published by Imam Ghazali Publishing in 2023, this 400-page hardcover edition has been described as unlike anything previously printed in English on this subject, a fitting testament to the care taken in bringing these three treatises together in one volume.

For the reader drawn to the sira and the qualities that distinguished the Prophet ﷺ among all creation, this collection offers a rare depth—three works in conversation with one another, each illuminating a different facet of the same subject. It belongs on the shelf of anyone seeking to know the Prophet ﷺ more fully, in the words of those who devoted their lives to this study.

About the authors

Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti: One of the most prolific scholars in Islamic history, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (849-911 AH / 1445-1505 CE), whose full name was Abu al-Fadl ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Khudayri al-Suyuti, was born and raised in Cairo. Orphaned in childhood, he memorized the entire Qurʾan by the age of eight and went on to study under many of the leading teachers of Mamluk Egypt, gathering ijazas from scholars across the Muslim world. He was a Shafiʿi in law and Ashʿari in creed, and at one point regarded himself as the mujaddid, the renewer, of his age. Biographers credit him with close to six hundred works, from brief epistles to large reference compilations, spanning tafsir, hadith, fiqh, Arabic grammar and rhetoric, history, and more. He is best remembered as co-author of Tafsir al-Jalalayn, completing the concise verse-by-verse Qurʾanic commentary begun by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli, and for al-Itqan fi ʿUlum al-Qurʾan, a landmark survey of the Qurʾanic sciences. Among his other enduring works are al-Jami al-Saghir, a much-used collection of Prophetic hadith, Tadrib al-Rawi on hadith methodology, Tarikh al-Khulafaʾ on the caliphs, and Husn al-Muhadara on the history of Egypt. In his forties he withdrew from teaching and public life, secluding himself on Rawda Island on the Nile to write, where he remained until his death in Cairo in 911 AH.

Izz al-Din ibn Abd al-Salam: Imam 'Izz al-Din 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd al-Salam al-Sulami rahimahullah (577-660 AH / 1181-1262 CE) was one of the most eminent Shafi'i jurists and legal theorists of the medieval Islamic world, widely titled Sultan al-'Ulama, the Sultan of Scholars. He studied and taught in Damascus and later in Cairo, where he served in positions of religious authority including the role of khatib at the Umayyad Mosque and later as a judge. He was known for his independence and moral courage in issuing legal opinions, including censure of the Ayyubid rulers. His scholarly output spanned Shafi'i jurisprudence, the principles and methodologies of Islamic law (usul al-fiqh), Qur'anic exegesis, the issuance of formal legal opinions (fatwa), questions of governance, and Islamic spirituality. His masterpiece Qawa'id al-Ahkam fi Masalih al-Anam (The Bases of Legal Rulings in the Interests of Mankind) is among the foundational texts of Islamic legal theory (maqasid al-shari'a). He also wrote on the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, including Bidayat al-Sul fi Tafdil al-Rasul.

About the translators

Moustafa Elqabbany: Moustafa Elqabbany is a Canadian-born translator, poet, and researcher who is based in Amman, Jordan. He has dedicated himself to making classical Arabic Islamic literature accessible to English readers and is associated with the Imam Ghazali Publishing imprint, through which several of his translations have appeared. His translation of Imam al-Ghazali's Ayyuha al-Walad - the celebrated epistle addressed to one of the Imam's advanced students on the question of which knowledge is most beneficial - was issued in a bilingual Arabic-English format, allowing English readers to engage with al-Ghazali's style while Arabic students may use his translation alongside the original. He also translated Al-Khasa'is Al-Muhammadiyyah, a compendium of classical treatises concerning the distinctive attributes of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, co-translated with Ahmad Derrick Peat. Beyond translation, Elqabbany is a published poet; he collaborated with Ibrahim Khan on an English poetic translation of Imam al-Shafi'i's poetry, issued by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Amman. He has additionally produced teaching content on Qur'anic Arabic.
