al-Risala al-Qushayriyya is the single most influential systematic exposition of Sunni Sufism. Composed by Imam Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri in 437 AH and addressed to the Sufis of his time, it opens with biographies of the early Sufi masters from al-Fudayl b. Iyad through al-Junayd to al-Qushayri's own teachers; turns then to a systematic treatment of the technical vocabulary of the path (tawba, mahabba, ridha, tawakkul, muraqaba, mushahada, and the rest); and culminates in a lengthy discussion of the manners (adab) of the wayfarer. The Risala became, almost immediately, the standard reference of the Sunni Sufi tradition; subsequent works — al-Suhrawardi's Awarif, al-Ghazali's relevant chapters in the Ihya, and many others — define themselves in relation to it.

For nearly a thousand years the Risala has stood as the canonical ground of the Sunni inner sciences. It is read in Sufi circles from West Africa to Southeast Asia, taught with ijaza, and remains the first systematic treatment of Sufism placed in the hands of a serious student.

About The Author

Imam Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Karim al-Qushayri (376-465 AH / 986-1072 CE) was a Khurasani Shafii jurist, Ashari theologian, and Sufi master. He combined classical training under al-Daqqaq (his father-in-law and Sufi master) and Abu Bakr b. Furak (in kalam) with extensive engagement in fiqh and hadith. His Lataif al-Isharat is among the major Sufi tafsirs; his Tartib al-Suluk and Nahw al-Qulub are widely-read shorter Sufi works.

"الرسالة القشيرية" أعظم تنظيرٍ كلاسيكي للتصوّف السنّي. صنّفها الإمام أبو القاسم القشيري سنة ٤٣٧ هـ، وجعلها رسالةً إلى مشايخ الصوفية في زمانه. تَفْتَتح بتراجم أئمّة الصوفية الأوائل من الفضيل بن عياض حتى الجنيد إلى شيوخ القشيري نفسه؛ ثم تنتقل إلى تَفْصيلٍ نظامي لمصطلحات الطريق (التوبة، المحبّة، الرضا، التوكّل، المراقبة، المشاهدة، ونحوها)؛ وتختم بِبَسْطٍ مطوَّل في آداب السالك. صار الكتاب — منذ صدوره — مرجع التصوف السنّي الكلاسيكي، ومنه استمدّ السهرورديُّ في "العوارف" والغزاليُّ في فصوله من "الإحياء" وغيرهما.

عن المؤلف

الإمام أبو القاسم عبد الكريم القشيري (٣٧٦-٤٦٥ هـ) فقيه شافعي ومتكلّم أشعري وشيخ صوفي خراساني. تتلمذ في التصوّف على الإمام أبي علي الدقّاق (وهو صهره)، وفي الكلام على ابن فورك. له تفسير "لطائف الإشارات" من أمّهات التفاسير الصوفية، ورسائل أخرى صوفية قصيرة كـ"نحو القلوب".
