About The Book

al-Shamail al-Muhammadiyya is Imam al-Tirmidhi's celebrated classical compilation of the hadiths describing the Prophet (peace be upon him) — his physical appearance, his manner of dress, his speech, his laughter, his weeping, his daily routines, his manner of eating and drinking, of sleeping and rising, of dealing with his family, his Companions, and his enemies. The work gathers some 397 hadiths into 56 thematic chapters, offering a verbal portrait of the Prophet such that the reader comes to know him not merely as a historical figure but as a present, living model.

Read continuously in Sunni circles since al-Tirmidhi's lifetime, the Shamail has generated more than thirty significant commentaries, including those of Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, al-Munawi, al-Bayjuri, and Ali al-Qari. It is recited collectively in the months of Rabi al-Awwal and Ramadan and remains one of the foundational texts of Sunni devotional life.

About The Author

Imam Abu Isa Muhammad b. Isa al-Tirmidhi (209-279 AH / 824-892 CE) was one of the great travelling hadith scholars of the third Islamic century. A student of al-Bukhari and Muslim, his Jami al-Tirmidhi is one of the Six Books (al-Kutub al-Sitta) of Sunni hadith — distinctive among them for its careful attention to the legal positions of the early jurists alongside the hadith citations. The Shamail is his second great contribution to Sunni hadith literature.
