Asbab al-Talif is Imam Yusuf al-Nabhani's autobiographical account of the motivations behind his prolific literary career — composed late in his life as a kind of intellectual self-portrait. Across its pages he explains why he chose to write what he wrote, the personal experiences and religious convictions that drove him into the defence of istighatha and the salawat genre, the encounters with reformist objections that prompted his more polemical works, and the spiritual states and visions that occasioned others. The work is a remarkable first-person document of late Sunni traditional scholarship at the close of the Ottoman age.

About The Author

Imam Yusuf b. Ismail al-Nabhani (1265-1350 AH / 1849-1932 CE) was a Palestinian Hanafi judge who served in the courts of Beirut under the late Ottoman empire. Born in Ijzim near Haifa to a family with deep scholarly and Sufi lineage, he received his classical training at al-Azhar in Cairo under masters including Shaykh Ibrahim al-Saqqa and Shaykh Yusuf al-Barqawi. He devoted his enormous literary energy to defending and propagating the traditional Sunni-Sufi heritage in an age of rising reformist challenge — composing more than eighty works in salawat, istighatha, manaqib, theological defense, and Prophetic praise.

"أسباب التأليف من العاجز الضعيف" تَقريرُ الإمام النبهاني الذاتي عن دوافع التأليف خلف مسيرته الأدبية الغزيرة — صنَّفه في أواخر حياته في صورة بَوْحٍ فكري لذاته. يَشْرَح في صفحاته لماذا اخْتار أن يَكْتب ما كَتَب، والتجارب الشخصيّة والقَناعات الدينيّة التي دَفَعَته إلى الدفاع عن الاستغاثة وعن أدب الصلوات، ولقاءاتُه بالاعتراضات الإصلاحية التي اسْتَدْعَت آثارَه الجَدَلية، والأحوال الروحية والرؤى التي اسْتَدْعَت سواها. وثيقةٌ شخصيّة فريدة من فترة أواخر تراث السنّة الكلاسيكي في خاتمة العهد العثماني.

عن المؤلف

الإمام يوسف بن إسماعيل النبهاني (١٢٦٥-١٣٥٠ هـ) قاضٍ حنفيٌّ فلسطيني خَدَم في محاكم بيروت في العهد العثماني المتأخّر. وُلد بإجزِم قرب حيفا في أسرةٍ ذات سلسلة علميّة وصوفية، وتَلَقَّى علمَه الكلاسيكي بالأزهر على شيوخٍ منهم الشيخ إبراهيم السقّا والشيخ يوسف البرقاوي. كرَّس طاقته الأدبية الهائلة للدفاع عن تراث السنّة والتصوّف ولِنَشْره في عصر التحدّيات الإصلاحية، فألَّف ما يَزيد على ثمانين كتاباً في الصلوات والاستغاثة والمناقب والدفاع العقدي ومديح النبي ﷺ.
