Awarif al-Maarif is Imam Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi's foundational manual of the Suhrawardi Sufi order — one of the major synthetic Sufi works of the early period, equivalent in influence to al-Qushayri's Risala and constituting the principal source from which the broader Sunni-Sufi vocabulary spread eastward into Persia and India. The work is organised into 63 chapters covering the foundational topics of the inner path: the etymology and definition of tasawwuf, the categories of the wayfarers, the disciplines of the dhikr, the rules of the khalwa, the manners of master and disciple, the inner meanings of the ritual practices, and the stations and states of the heart.

About The Author

Imam Shihab al-Din Abu Hafs Umar al-Suhrawardi (539-632 AH / 1145-1234 CE) was a Baghdadi Shafii scholar and Sufi master, founder of the Suhrawardi tariqa (one of the four great original Sufi orders alongside the Qadiri, Chishti, and Naqshbandi). He served the Abbasid Caliphs as an envoy and as Shaykh of the city's Sufi establishment. His order spread widely into Persia, Central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.

"عوارف المعارف" دليلُ الإمام شهاب الدين السهروردي التأسيسي للطريقة السهروردية — من أعظم الأعمال التركيبية في تاريخ التصوّف المبكر، في موضع "الرسالة القشيرية" نَفْسه من حيث الأثر، وهو المصدر الرئيس الذي انْتَشَر منه قاموسُ التصوّف السنّي شرقاً إلى فارس والهند. الكتابُ في ٦٣ باباً تَستوعب موضوعات الباطن: اشتقاق التصوّف وتعريفه، وأقسام السالكين، وقواعد الذكر، وأحكام الخلوة، وآداب الشيخ والمريد، وأسرار العبادات، ومنازل القلوب وأحوالها.

عن المؤلف

الإمام شهاب الدين أبو حفص عمر السهروردي (٥٣٩-٦٣٢ هـ) عالم شافعي وشيخ صوفي بغدادي، مؤسّسُ الطريقة السهروردية (أحدُ الطرق الكبرى الأربع مع القادرية والشاذلية والنقشبندية). خَدَم الخلفاء العباسيين سفيراً وشيخاً للصوفية بِبَغداد. انتشرت طريقتُه في فارس وآسيا الوسطى والهند.
