Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Jazuli: Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Jazuli (d. 870 AH / 1465 CE) was a Moroccan saint and Sufi guide of the Shadhili tradition, best known as the compiler of Dalaʾil al-Khayrat (The Waymarks of Benefits), the most beloved and widely transmitted collection of litanies invoking blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad. A Berber of the Jazula tribe of the Sus, the region between the Atlantic and the Atlas mountains, he was born in the early ninth century AH and traveled to Fes for his studies, lodging in one of its madrasas. He took the Shadhili path, spent many years in seclusion, and afterward settled in the Moroccan south, where his zawiya drew large numbers of followers and became a center of devotion and renewal of love for the Prophet. He followed the Maliki school in law, as was customary across the Maghrib. Dalaʾil al-Khayrat spread from Morocco across the Muslim world, copied in countless manuscripts and recited daily in mosques and homes from West Africa to the Indian subcontinent and the Ottoman lands. Al-Jazuli died at Afughal, where reports hold that he was poisoned during the dawn prayer. Roughly seventy years later his body was transferred to Marrakesh by the Saadian ruler Ahmad al-Aʿraj, and he came to be counted among the Seven Saints of Marrakesh, his mausoleum a long-standing site of visitation.
