About The Book

Lataif al-Minan is Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari's spiritual biography of the two foundational masters of the Shadhili order — Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili (d. 656 AH) and his successor Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi (d. 686 AH), Ibn Ata Allah's own shaykh. Written by the order's third great master, the work is at once a record of the miracles (karamat) and sayings of the first two shaykhs, a defense of the Shadhili way against its detractors, and an exposition — through example — of the spiritual ideals al-Shadhili and al-Mursi embodied. For the historian of Sunni Sufism it remains the single most important contemporary source for the origins of the Shadhiliyya.

Ibn Ata Allah's prose is luminous and his portraits of his two shaykhs intimate; the work is read across the Shadhili world as a foundational reference and as a devotional companion.

About The Author

Imam Ahmad b. Muhammad Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari (658-709 AH / 1259-1309 CE) was the third great master of the Shadhili order after Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili and Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi. A Maliki jurist who taught in al-Azhar, he gave the Shadhili teaching its first systematic written expression in his Hikam, his Lataif al-Minan, his Miftah al-Falah, and his Taj al-Arus.
