Matn Abi Shuja — also known as Ghayat al-Ikhtisar — is the universal beginner's matn of the Shafii school. Composed by Qadi Abu Shuja al-Isfahani in fifth-century AH Basra, the matn distills the entire ground of Shafii ibadat and muamalat into a short prose tract of perhaps fifty pages: tahara, salat, zakat, fasting, hajj, sales, inheritance, marriage and divorce, criminal law, judicature. Its directness, its memorability, and its adherence to the standard Shafii positions account for its uninterrupted use as the field's universal primer for more than nine centuries.

Matn Abi Shuja has generated more than sixty significant commentaries, foremost among them Ibn Qasim al-Ghazzi's Fath al-Qarib, Khatib al-Shirbini's al-Iqna, and the celebrated supercommentary of Shaykh Ibrahim al-Bajuri.

About The Author

al-Qadi Abu Shuja Ahmad b. al-Husayn al-Isfahani (434-c.500 AH / 1042-c.1107 CE) was a Persian Shafii jurist who served as judge in Basra. His Ghayat al-Ikhtisar is the only one of his works to have survived in widespread circulation, but it has carried his name across Sunni history as the author of the universal Shafii primer.

"متن أبي شجاع" (المعروف بـ"غاية الاختصار") هو المتن المُعْتَمد لمبتدئي الفقه الشافعي في كلِّ الأقطار. صنّفه القاضي أبو شجاع الأصفهاني في القرن الخامس الهجري بالبصرة، يستوعب فيه عبادات الفقه الشافعي ومعاملاته في نَثْرٍ موجز: الطهارة، والصلاة، والزكاة، والصيام، والحجّ، والبيوع، والمواريث، والأنكحة والطلاق، والجنايات، والقضاء. وعليه أكثر من ستّين شرحاً معتبراً، أبرزها فتح القريب لابن قاسم الغزّي، والإقناع للخطيب الشربيني، وحاشية الشيخ الباجوري.

عن المؤلف

القاضي أبو شجاع أحمد بن الحسين الأصفهاني (٤٣٤-نحو ٥٠٠ هـ) فقيه شافعي فارسي تَوَلَّى القضاء بالبصرة. لم يَبْقَ من مؤلَّفاته في التداول الواسع إلا "غاية الاختصار"، لكنّها حَمَلت اسمَه عبر تاريخ السنّة كصاحبِ متن الشافعية المعتمد للمبتدئين.
