Mawlid al-Barzanji is the most widely-recited prose Mawlid in the world — the centerpiece of Mawlid gatherings from West Africa to the Indian subcontinent, from the Hadrami diaspora to Southeast Asia. Composed by the eighteenth-century Madinan scholar Sayyid Jafar al-Barzanji, the work narrates the Prophetic life from the noble lineage and the lights that preceded the Prophet (peace be upon him) through his birth, his early life, his call to prophecy, his message, his ascension, and his return to his Lord — interweaving narrative passages with rhyming refrains that congregations join in reciting communally.

Mawlid al-Barzanji has been continuously recited in Sunni gatherings for more than two and a half centuries. Its rhythmic prose, its scriptural anchoring, and its participatory refrains have made it one of the most beloved devotional works in the Sunni-Sufi world.

About The Author

Sayyid Jafar b. Hasan al-Barzanji (1126-1177 AH / 1714-1764 CE) was a Madinan Shafii scholar of Kurdish-Iraqi descent whose family migrated to Madina, where he became a leading scholar and the mufti of the Shafii school. Beyond his celebrated Mawlid he authored substantial works in fiqh and hadith.

"مولد البرزنجي" أوسع المواليد النثرية انتشاراً في العالم — هو محورُ مجالس المولد من غرب أفريقيا إلى الهند، ومن الجاليات الحضرمية إلى جنوب شرق آسيا. صنّفه السيد جعفر البرزنجي في القرن الثاني عشر الهجري بالمدينة المنوّرة. يَرْوي السيرةَ النبوية من النَّسَب الشريف والأنوار التي سبقت النبي ﷺ، عبر مولده ونشأته وبَعْثه ودعوته وإسرائه ووفاته — مَزْجاً بين السرد والقَوافي التي يَشْتَرِك معه فيها الحضور.

عن المؤلف

السيد جعفر بن حسن البرزنجي (١١٢٦-١١٧٧ هـ) عالمٌ شافعيٌّ مدنيٌّ من أصلٍ كردي-عراقي. هاجرت أسرتُه إلى المدينة المنوّرة، وفيها صار من مفتي الشافعية. له بالإضافة إلى المولد مصنّفاتٌ في الفقه والحديث.
