About The Book

Imam al-Nawawi's celebrated Minhaj al-Talibin wa Umdat al-Muftin — the foundational matn of late Shafii jurisprudence, around which the entire post-classical school has organised itself.

The main aspect in the foundation of the madhhab is the verdict of the al-Imam. The Ulama and the books constitute the basis and source of strength of the madhhab. The Ulama explain and elaborate the original verdict of the Imam and disseminates them while the books preserve and ensure that the authentic views of the madhhab are transmitted to a later generation.

Al-Imam al-Subki (765 H) mentioned regarding al-Minhaj of al-Imam al-Nawawi, In this era, this book is the most excellent book for students and many scholars to understand the madhhab. There are almost one hundred commentaries of the al-Minhaj. It has been abridged, explained, annotated, and verified (compiled in the form of poetry).

The four main commentaries of al-Minhaj are

(1) Tuhfat al-muhtaj by al-Imam Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Hajar al-Haytami al-Makki (974 H),
(2) Nihayat al-muhtaj ila sharh al-Minhaj by al-Imam Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamzah al-Ramli (1004 H),
(3) Mughni al-muhtaj ila ma'rifat al-mani alfaz sharh al-Minhaj by al-Imam Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Khatib al-Shirbini (977 H) and
(4) Kanz al-raghibin sharh Minhaj al-talibin by al-Imam Jalal al-Dīn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Mahalli (864 H).

This book contains two other books:

Sulamul Muta'alim Al-Muhtaj Ila Ma'rifat Rumuzul Minhaj
&
Al-Ibtihaj Fi Bayani Istilahil Minhaj.

The book has i'rab all the way in large fonts that makes it easy and readable. Highly recommendable to any student of the Shafi'i School of law.

About the author

al-Nawawi: Abu Zakariya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676 AH / 1233-1277 CE) was born in the village of Nawa, south of Damascus, from which he takes his name. As a young man he moved to Damascus, then a great center of learning, where he immersed himself in the religious sciences with extraordinary discipline, reportedly attending many study circles each day. Shafiʿi in law, he became one of the school's foremost authorities, and is honored with the title Muhyi al-Din, "reviver of the religion." He was renowned for his piety, simplicity, and detachment from worldly comfort, declining wealth and position to remain devoted to learning and teaching. Though his life was short, his scholarship was vast and remarkably enduring. Among his landmark works are Riyad al-Salihin, a thematically arranged collection of nearly two thousand hadith on ethics, worship, and noble character that remains among the most widely read books in the Muslim world; al-Arbaʿun (the Forty Hadith), a concise gathering of foundational traditions studied by beginners and scholars alike; Kitab al-Adhkar, on supplication and remembrance of God; the influential Shafiʿi legal manual Minhaj al-Talibin; and al-Minhaj, his detailed commentary on Sahih Muslim. His writings continue to anchor traditional Islamic study to this day.
