Musnad al-Imam Ahmad is the largest of the canonical Sunni hadith collections — some 27,000 to 30,000 reports depending on the recension — compiled by the founder of the Hanbali school and the supreme symbol of third-century-AH Sunni doctrinal steadfastness. Where Bukhari and Muslim organise their collections by topic, Imam Ahmad organises his by Companion: each Companion's section contains the hadiths he transmitted, with the result that the work serves as a single-volume reference for which hadiths trace back to which Companion. The compilation includes hadiths of every grade — sahih, hasan, and weak — with later scholars (notably Imam Ahmad's own son and the hadith critics of subsequent generations) supplying the gradings.

This 14-volume edition presents the complete Musnad in clean print with the standard ordering preserved. The work is an indispensable reference for any serious student of hadith and a major source of hadiths not found in the six canonical collections.

About The Author

Imam Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Hanbal al-Shaybani (164-241 AH / 780-855 CE) was the founder of the Hanbali school of fiqh and the great hadith master of third-century AH Baghdad. He famously endured imprisonment and torture during the mihna (the Mutazili inquisition over the createdness of the Quran) without renouncing the Sunni position — establishing him as the supreme symbol of Sunni doctrinal steadfastness. His Musnad is the largest of the canonical Sunni hadith collections.

مسند الإمام أحمد أَكْبَر الكتب الحديثية السنّية الكلاسيكية — نحو ٢٧٠٠٠ إلى ٣٠٠٠٠ خبر حسب الرواية — صنَّفه مؤسّسُ المذهب الحنبلي ورمزُ الثَّبَات العَقَدي السنّي في القرن الثالث الهجري. حيث رَتَّب البخاري ومسلم كتبَيهما على الأبواب، رَتَّب الإمام أحمد مسندَه على الصحابة: لكلِّ صحابيٍّ بابُه الذي يَستوعب أحاديثَه، فيكون الكتابُ مرجعاً واحداً لِمَعرفة مَن مِنَ الصحابة روى ماذا. يَستوعب الكتابُ الأحاديثَ من جميع الدرجات — الصحيح والحسن والضعيف — وقد عَدَّل لاحقُو ذلك (وخاصّةً ابنُ الإمام أحمد ونقّادُ الحديث في الأَجْيال اللاحقة) أحكامها.

عن المؤلف

الإمام أحمد بن محمد بن حنبل الشيباني (١٦٤-٢٤١ هـ) مؤسّسُ المذهب الحنبلي في الفقه، وإمامُ أهل الحديث ببغداد في القرن الثالث الهجري. صَبَر على السجن والإيذاء في المحنة (محنة خَلْق القرآن المعتزلية) دون أن يَتَنازَل عن موقف السنّة، فصار رمزَ الثبات العَقَدي السنّي. ومسنده أكبر الكتب الحديثية السنّية على الإطلاق.
