Nahw al-Qulub is a unique short work by Imam al-Qushayri in which the structures of Arabic grammar — the harf, the kalima, the noun-verb-particle distinction, ifrad and tathniya, the operators and the operated-upon, the marfu, the mansub, the majrur — become metaphors for the disciplines of the spiritual heart. The book is at once a piece of pedagogical wit (it teaches grammar through spirituality and spirituality through grammar) and a remarkably original contribution to Sufi prose: the wayfarer's heart is, like the Arabic sentence, a structured organism in which every state governs and is governed by another.

Read primarily within Sufi circles as a curiosity and as a meditation on the structural unity of the inner and outer sciences, the work has no real parallel in classical Sufi literature.

About The Author

Imam Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Karim al-Qushayri (376-465 AH / 986-1072 CE) was a Khurasani Shafii jurist, Ashari theologian, and Sufi master. His al-Risala al-Qushayriyya is the foundational systematic exposition of Sunni Sufism; his Lataif al-Isharat is among the major Sufi tafsirs.

الإمام أبو القاسم عبد الكريم القشيري (٣٧٦-٤٦٥ هـ) فقيه شافعي ومتكلّم أشعري وشيخ صوفي خراساني. "رسالته القشيرية" متن التصوّف السنّي الكلاسيكي، و"لطائف الإشارات" من أمّهات التفاسير الصوفية.
