This book is a translation of Shaykh Husain Ahmad Madani’s autobiography, highlighting the colonial practices that reduced Indians to economic poverty, erasing their culture and corrupting their faith. It shows the jihad of Shaykh Madani, free from the Eurocentric paradigm of vested interest and hierarchy. It explains why the British imprisoned him in Malta, for two years in Sabarmati prison with hard labour, and in Nene Jail, Allahabad.
The book also brings forward the role of prominent individuals and institutes in ending the British colonialism of India. It traces the resistance movement from the foundation of Darul-Uloom Deoband by Shaykh Qasim Nanotwi and Shaykh Rashid Aḥmad Gangohi after the 1857 British occupation of Delhi. It also includes the role of Shaykh Sayyid Aḥmad Shaheed and Shaykh al-Hind Mahmud Hasan.
This book is a small way of acknowledging his contribution and challenging nationalist and exclusivist historians who have written out the Muslims’ efforts in liberating India.

Husain Ahmad Madani: Shaykh Husain Ahmad Madani rahimahullah (1879-1957) was one of the foremost Deobandi scholars of the twentieth century, renowned as a hadith scholar, jurist, Sufi, and leader in the Indian independence movement. Born in Bangarmau, Uttar Pradesh, he traveled to Madina as a young man and studied and taught at Masjid al-Nabawi for many years. He was among the leading students of Shaykh al-Hind Mahmud Hasan Deobandi at Darul Uloom Deoband, where he later served as the head teacher of hadith (shaykh al-hadith) for decades. A prominent figure in the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, he played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and was imprisoned by British authorities on multiple occasions, including a period in Malta. His autobiography, Naqsh-e-Hayat (Imprint of a Life), remains an essential record of the Deobandi scholarly tradition and the political struggles of the era.

Abdur Raheem Kidwai: Abdur Raheem Kidwai (b. 1956 CE) is an Indian academic and writer, Professor of English at Aligarh Muslim University, where he also serves as honorary director of the K. A. Nizami Centre for Quranic Studies. He earned two doctorates in English, one from Aligarh Muslim University and one from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, and has taught at Aligarh for decades. His scholarly interests bridge English literary studies and Islamic studies, with attention to literary orientalism, the long history of English translations of the Qurʾan, Urdu-English translation, Islam in the West, and interfaith dialogue. He is a notably prolific writer, credited with more than forty authored and edited books and some 250 articles and reviews, and he has himself rendered the Qurʾan into accessible English in a work first issued in 2013 and revised in later editions. For a wider readership, his books include the Daily Wisdom series, gathering selections from the Holy Qurʾan and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, alongside practical companions to Islamic prayers and supplications and surveys of the blessed names and attributes of God and of the Prophet. His writing aims to make the Qurʾan and the Islamic tradition approachable for English-speaking readers while remaining grounded in careful scholarship.

Ismail Adam Patel: Ismail Adam Patel (born 1963) is a British optician and Islamic activist based in Leicester, England. He founded Friends of Al-Aqsa, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of the situation in Palestine, around 1995. In addition to his activism, he serves on the advisory board of the Conflicts Forum, an organization that engages with Islamist movements, and has served as director of IslamExpo. He is a member of the Special Advisory Board of Clear Conscience and contributes written commentary to major media outlets including The Guardian, The Independent, Al Jazeera English, and Arabian Business. He is the author of 'Huma's Travel Guide To Palestine' and served as editor of 'Naqsh-e-Hayat: A Biography and Memoirs of Shaykh Husain Ahmad Madani.'

His primary teacher in the hadith sciences was Sheikh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Yunus Jawnpuri of Saharanpur, India, a scholar of international renown in the transmission of hadith. He also holds formal authorizations in the hadith sciences from Sheikh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya. His scholarly contributions include works on hadith, Islamic jurisprudence, and Quranic commentary, and his students number among the most prominent Islamic scholars serving Muslim communities in the United Kingdom today.
