Nihayat al-Zayn fi al-Takhfif an Abi Lahab Yawm al-Ithnayn is Shaykh Muhammad Akhtar Rida Khan's treatise on the alleviation of Abu Lahab's punishment on Mondays — the celebrated tradition, recorded in Bukhari's Sahih, that Abu Lahab is granted respite from the punishment of the grave on Mondays because of his joy at the birth of his nephew Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and the spiritual significance of this for the day of the Prophet's birth, the Monday of Rabi al-Awwal, and by extension the legitimacy and meritoriousness of celebrating the Mawlid. Defends the Sunni Mawlid tradition against modernist objections.

About The Author

Shaykh Muhammad Akhtar Rida Khan al-Azhari (1361-1439 AH / 1942-2018 CE) was the Grand Mufti of India and the supreme religious authority of the South Asian Sunni-Barelvi community of his generation. The grandson of Imam Ahmad Rida Khan, he was educated at the family madrasa Manzar al-Islam in Bareilly and then at al-Azhar in Cairo, returning to India to serve as Grand Mufti and to lead the development of the Sunni scholarly establishment in the subcontinent through the late twentieth century.

"نهاية الزَّيْن في التخفيف عن أبي لهب يوم الاثنين" رسالةُ الشيخ محمد أختر رضا خان في تَخْفيف العذاب عن أبي لهب يوم الاثنين — الأَثَرُ المشهور المُسَجَّل في صحيح البخاري بأنّ أبا لهب يُخَفَّف عنه يومَ الاثنين فَرَحاً بمولد ابن أخيه محمد ﷺ — وما يَتَرَتَّب على ذلك من معنىً روحي ليوم ميلاد النبي ﷺ، وهو اثنين ربيع الأول، وما يَتَرَتَّب من شرعية الاحتفال بالمولد وفَضْلِه. يَدْفَع عن تَقْليد المولد السنّي في وجه الاعتراضات الحداثية.

عن المؤلف

الشيخ محمد أختر رضا خان الأزهري (١٣٦١-١٤٣٩ هـ) مُفتي الهند الأكبر، والمرجعُ الديني الأَعْلى لجماعة السنّة الأهلية البريلوية بالقارّة الهندية في جيله. حفيد الإمام أحمد رضا خان، تَخَرَّج من مدرسة الأسرة "منظر الإسلام" ببَريلي ثم من الأزهر بالقاهرة، ورَجَع إلى الهند مُفتياً وقائداً لِبِناء المؤسسة العلمية السنّية بالقارّة طوال أواخر القرن العشرين.
