Notions That Must Be Corrected is perhaps the most important and renowned work of the late Sayyid, Shaykh Muhammad b. ‘Alawi al-Maliki al-Hasani (ra). Throughout his masterpiece the author offers valuable and wise words of caution against extremism and invites the Muslims to the path of Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jama‘a, the hallmark of which is tolerance and moderation. Sayyid Muhammad expertly clarifies the correct position relating to numerous ‘controversial’ contemporary topics whilst maintaining strict adherence to the Qur’an, the Sunna, and the way of the Salaf.
The book itself has been divided into three parts, the first of which is concerned with areas of research relating to Islamic doctrine, including clarifying the corruption found in the criterion for imputing others with disbelief and misguidance, as well as concepts such as intermediation and intercession. The second section deals with issues relating to the Prophet e, including his unique characteristics, the reality of Prophecy, the reality of humanity, and the correct understanding of seeking blessings from the Prophet e and his relics. The final part deals with miscellaneous areas of research including the Isthmus life (barzakh), the legality of visiting the Prophet e, and other related matters such as relics, sanctuaries, and festive religious occasions.
Scores of Islamic scholars hailing from all parts of the world wrote commendations for this work, while many more have taught from it, or written about it in their articles. The huge positive impact the book made in Islamic circles unfortunately led to hardship for the noble Shaykh in his home country due to misguided verdicts leveled against him. He was prevented from teaching in the Masjid al-Haram and his position at Umm al-Qurra’ University was also terminated. Numerous vicious personal attacks and baseless replies from those who opposed the methodology of Ahl al-Sunna were also published. In response to this, leading scholars throughout the world vehemently defended the noble Shaykh and wrote extensive and decisive refutations of his detractors.

Muhammad Alawi al-Maliki: Muhammad ibn Alawi al-Maliki al-Hasani (1363-1426 AH / 1944-2004 CE) was among the foremost traditional Sunni scholars of his age, a Hasani sayyid descended from the Prophet through his grandson al-Hasan. He was born in Makka into the renowned al-Maliki family, in which five forebears had served as Maliki imams of the Masjid al-Haram, his grandfather al-Sayyid Abbas having been mufti and khatib of the Sacred Mosque. He memorized the Qurʾan in his youth under his father al-Sayyid Alawi, studied the traditional sciences with leading teachers of the Hijaz, and earned a doctorate from al-Azhar in Egypt while still young, gathering ijazas from scholars across the Muslim world. He taught within the Masjid al-Haram in his father's circle and at Umm al-Qura University, and after being removed from those posts he continued teaching from his home, where evening gatherings drew hundreds of students. Maliki in jurisprudence and Ashʿari in creed, attached to the Shadhili path, he authored close to a hundred works on creed, hadith, Qurʾanic exegesis, sira, and spirituality. His Mafahim Yajib an Tusahhah (rendered "Notions That Must Be Corrected") became a landmark defense of mainstream Sunni belief and devotion to the Prophet. He died in Makka and was buried at Jannat al-Muʿalla; his students carry his teaching across the Islamic world.

Abdul Aziz Suraqah: Abdul Aziz Suraqah is an American Muslim translator, teacher, and author based in Toronto, Canada. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he embraced Islam as a teenager after reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X, which sparked an enduring engagement with Islamic learning. He pursued traditional Islamic education in Yemen at Dar al-Hadith al-Khayriyya, in Mauritania at the mahdara of Umm al-Qura under the tutelage of Shaykh Muhammad Salim Ould 'Addud, and in Morocco, where he was among the first Western students admitted full-time to the traditional Qur'an school in the remote village of Sidi Ghiyyath. His studies focused on theology, legal theory, Arabic grammar, rhetoric, and literature. Since 1998, he has taught Arabic and Islamic studies, and from 2005 he has dedicated himself to full-time translation from Arabic into English, producing over fifty published and unpublished works. His translations span classical texts in Sufism, theology, and prophetic devotion, including 'Realities of Sufism' (Haqaiq an al-Tasawwuf by Shaykh Abd al-Qadir Isa), 'The Sanusi Creed', and numerous works related to the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He currently teaches Arabic and Islamic studies at Dar al-Ma'rifah and Risalah Foundation in Toronto, where he lives with his family.
