Description

**Pearls in the Deep**, by Naz Hassan, is a reflective study on the problem of evil and suffering as approached through the Qur'an. Rather than offering abstract theological argument alone, the book examines tragedy and calamity as they appear across a wide range of sources, drawing on the Qur'an alongside film, literature, and the broader Islamic tradition to illuminate how believers have wrestled with pain and loss.

A distinctive thread running through the work is its engagement with the thought of Said Nursi, whose reflections on trial and meaning inform the author's approach to these difficult questions. Readers looking for a treatment of suffering that stays close to Islamic sources while remaining open to insights from wider culture will find this a thoughtful companion.

This edition from Safina Society presents the work for readers seeking to think through hardship, calamity, and the presence of evil within a framework rooted in the Qur'an and Islamic scholarship, without shying away from the emotional and intellectual weight such questions carry.

About the foreword writer

Asrar Rashid: Shaykh Asrar Rashid is a British-Pakistani Sunni Muslim scholar, author, debater, and teacher based in Birmingham, England. He received his initial education in Birmingham and subsequently traveled to Damascus, Syria, where he studied at the university, the Grand Umayyad Mosque, and Masjid Muhyiddin. During these studies he pursued training in Arabic, Ash'ari kalam, traditional rational theology, and ancillary Islamic sciences, and received formal ijaza from Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqubi, Mawlana Rasul Baksh Saidi, Mufti Yar Muhammad Qadri, and other senior scholars. He produced the first-ever English translations of two celebrated classical primers originally composed in Persian: Nahw Mir: A Primer in Arabic Grammar by al-Sayyid al-Sharif Ali b. Muhammad al-Jurjani, and the companion volume Sarf Baha'i: A Primer in Arabic Morphology by Baha al-Din Muhammad al-Amili, both published by Dar al-Imam Yusuf al-Nabhani. He also contributed a foreword to Pearls in the Deep, a work engaging with the thought of Imam Said Nursi. His authored works include Islam Answers Atheism (2021) and Navigating the End of Time, and he is active as a public lecturer, debater, and commentator on contemporary Islamic issues.
