Habib Umar bin Hafiz put this collection together for students who are just starting with hadith, and the Arabic title says so outright: al-Mukhtār min al-Ḥadīth… li'l-mubtadiʾbīn, selections for beginners. The fifty-nine hadiths he chose are short enough to memorize in a sitting. Actions are by intentions. Be mindful of Allah wherever you are. The best of you are those most beautiful in character. He drew them from Shifāʾ al-Saqīm, the hadith compilation of his teacher and father-in-law Habib Muhammad al-Haddār, which reaches back through al-Munāwī's Fayḍ al-Qadīr to al-Suyūṭī's al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr.

What sets this edition apart is the commentary. Every hadith is given in fully vocalized Arabic, then in English with its source named, then unpacked three ways: a short glossary of the terms doing the real work in it, a plain reading of what it means, and a numbered set of lessons to take from it. The explanatory material is translated from Tuḥfat al-Nāẓirīn, a commentary by Sayyida Umm Ibrahim, daughter of the Tarim scholar Habib ʿAbdullāh bin Maḥfūẓ al-Ḥaddād. Amjad Tarsin, who studied at Dar al-Mustafa under the author, keeps the English plain enough for a thirteen-year-old without thinning it out, and the commentary is pitched so a teacher can take it up or down to suit the room.

SoulFood Publications has bound it as a hardcover with a ribbon marker across 150 pages, which is the right build for a book meant to survive a school year and be opened again after it. It is designed as the step before Imam al-Nawawi's Forty, and it works just as well for an adult coming to hadith late, a weekend-school syllabus, or a parent memorizing alongside a child.
