All praise belongs to Allah as befits His Majesty and Perfection. And may prayers and salutations be upon our Master Muhammad and his family.
He is our first teacher and Shaykh; the reliable pillar of those who arrived and the exemplar of the spiritual travellers; the possessor of splendid miracles and manifest spiritual allusions; the Shaykh of the Shadhilis in the blessed land of Aleppo; the reviver of the path of the esteemed ‘Alawi Darqawi Shadhilis in the Levant; the goal of the resolute and the qibla of the purveyors of spiritual divestment; and the possessor of radiant countenance and Muhammadan lights. He is the Shaykh of the noble and renowned Qadiri Shadhili spiritual path [Tariqa]; the spiritual guide and trainer: Sayyidi ‘Abd al-Qadir ‘Isa al-‘Azizi al-Husayni – may Allah have mercy upon him. His biography resembles that of the rightly-guided Ummayad Caliph ‘Umar b. ‘Abd al-‘Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him.
He grew up wearing the finest of clothes and using the most expensive of scents – in fact, similitudes were struck among the people on the basis of his elegant style and handsome appearance. That was until, the people of Allah captivated him with love for Allah Most High and complete immersion in His remembrance. He journeyed from the created universe to the Creator and remained in that state until his soul returned – content with its love for its Lord – to its Maker. May Allah Most High reward him on our behalf with the best reward.
He left Syria for the Hijaz and then to Jordan and was subject to injuries and tests for the sake of Allah. He was confronted by foolish people and remained firm in the face of many types of tribulation. He later went to Turkey to pour out his noble soul to his Maker and was buried next to the esteemed Companion, our master Abu Ayyub al-Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him.
During his days of exile and tribulation he wrote this beautiful book Realities of Sufism. His intention behind the book was to refute the various misconceptions and false claims levelled against the esteemed path of the real Sufism; the Sufism that is confined to the Book and the Sunna and that follows the predecessors of this Umma: Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama‘a.
In reality, the writings of our noble Shaykh – may Allah be pleased with him – are in fact his students, pupils, and loving well-wishers who filled the earth with light and knowledge. May Allah be pleased with him on our behalf and elevate his station in highest level of Jannat al-Firdaws.

About the author
Abd al-Qadir Isa: Shaykh Abd al-Qadir Isa Diyab rahimahullah (1920-1991 CE / 1339-1412 AH) was a Syrian scholar from Aleppo and a Shadhili Sufi shaykh. He was among the foremost defenders of the traditional Sunni-Sufi heritage in twentieth-century Syria, working against the tide of reformist critiques that were gaining ground in his era. His magnum opus, Haqaiq an al-Tasawwuf (Realities of Sufism), addresses the core themes of Sunni Sufism - the discipline of the self, the role of the shaykh, the practice of dhikr, spiritual stations, the question of saintly miracles (karamat), and the relationship of Sufism to the Sharia and Islamic creed. The work responds systematically to modern objections to each topic, grounding every position in the Qur'an, sound hadith, the opinions of the four Imams, and the classical scholarly consensus. It has been translated into multiple languages and remains one of the most widely read contemporary introductions to Sunni Sufism. He also authored al-Mizan al-Adil li-Tamyiz al-Haqq min al-Batil.
About the translator
Abdul Aziz Suraqah: Abdul Aziz Suraqah is an American Muslim translator, teacher, and author based in Toronto, Canada. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he embraced Islam as a teenager after reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X, which sparked an enduring engagement with Islamic learning. He pursued traditional Islamic education in Yemen at Dar al-Hadith al-Khayriyya, in Mauritania at the mahdara of Umm al-Qura under the tutelage of Shaykh Muhammad Salim Ould 'Addud, and in Morocco, where he was among the first Western students admitted full-time to the traditional Qur'an school in the remote village of Sidi Ghiyyath. His studies focused on theology, legal theory, Arabic grammar, rhetoric, and literature. Since 1998, he has taught Arabic and Islamic studies, and from 2005 he has dedicated himself to full-time translation from Arabic into English, producing over fifty published and unpublished works. His translations span classical texts in Sufism, theology, and prophetic devotion, including 'Realities of Sufism' (Haqaiq an al-Tasawwuf by Shaykh Abd al-Qadir Isa), 'The Sanusi Creed', and numerous works related to the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He currently teaches Arabic and Islamic studies at Dar al-Ma'rifah and Risalah Foundation in Toronto, where he lives with his family.
