Since its compilation over a thousand years ago, Sahih Muslim has been recognized by scholars as an authentic collection of Prophetic teachings second only to that of Imam Bukhari (d. 256/870). The hadith collection of Imam Muslim (d. 261/875) has had innumerable commentaries written on it down to modern times. al-Nawawi: Abu Zakariya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676 AH / 1233-1277 CE) was born in the village of Nawa, south of Damascus, from which he takes his name. As a young man he moved to Damascus, then a great center of learning, where he immersed himself in the religious sciences with extraordinary discipline, reportedly attending many study circles each day. Shafiʿi in law, he became one of the school's foremost authorities, and is honored with the title Muhyi al-Din, "reviver of the religion." He was renowned for his piety, simplicity, and detachment from worldly comfort, declining wealth and position to remain devoted to learning and teaching. Though his life was short, his scholarship was vast and remarkably enduring. Among his landmark works are Riyad al-Salihin, a thematically arranged collection of nearly two thousand hadith on ethics, worship, and noble character that remains among the most widely read books in the Muslim world; al-Arbaʿun (the Forty Hadith), a concise gathering of foundational traditions studied by beginners and scholars alike; Kitab al-Adhkar, on supplication and remembrance of God; the influential Shafiʿi legal manual Minhaj al-Talibin; and al-Minhaj, his detailed commentary on Sahih Muslim. His writings continue to anchor traditional Islamic study to this day.

Adil Salahi: Adil Salahi is a contemporary scholar, author, and translator whose work has helped bring the Islamic tradition to English-speaking readers. Trained in the classical sciences under teachers in Damascus, in the long-standing tradition of study and certification, he combined that grounding with a background in English literature. For many years he taught at the Markfield Institute of Higher Education in England. The greater part of his career was in broadcasting and print journalism. He worked with Syrian radio and the BBC Arabic Service, contributed to the Arabic daily al-Sharq al-Awsat, and for more than thirty years wrote the full-page column "Islam in Perspective" for the Saudi newspaper Arab News. As an author, Salahi is best known for Muhammad: Man and Prophet, a widely read life of the Prophet that has gone through many printings and appeared in several languages, and for the companion study Muhammad: His Character and Conduct, as well as Pioneers of Islamic Scholarship. His translations include Sayyid Qutb's eighteen-volume Qur'anic commentary Fi Zilal al-Qur'an (In the Shade of the Qur'an) and an English rendering of the Qur'an. His other writings range across hadith studies, Qur'anic sciences, and questions of family and society, reflecting a lifelong concern to explain Islam clearly to a modern audience.
