About The Book
The illustrious Imam and erudite scholar of al-Azhar, Shaykh Salih al-Ja'fari, authored an extraordinary amount of poetry on many subjects. The Shaykh's poems comprise twelve volumes, which grouped according to their subject matter, ranging from the remembrance and glorification of Allah, advice for the one traversing the spiritual path to Allah, exalting the excellence of the Beloved ﷺ and the Ahl al-Bayt, and the virtues of the Path’s litanies and salawat.
This book contains selected poems from the first of those twelve volumes. These selections focus on the relationship between the shaykh and murid, as well as the virtues of the spiritual path. These poems were specifically selected by Shaykh Muhammad Salih al-Ja'fari, the grandson of Shaykh Salih al-Ja'fari. The core of these selected poems, just as in the shaykh’s poetry overall, are from the genre of what is known as madih (praise poetry), in praise of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Ahl al-Bayt.
Regarding the methodology of his father, Shaykh 'Abd-al-Ghani al-Ja'fari said the following:
"This door of spiritual openings, which our Shaykh traveled, is a clear opening, and whoever traverses it will arrive, and whoever arrives will be connected, and whoever is connected will see and witness, and whoever has witnessed, has intimate discourse, and becomes acquainted, and whoever becomes acquainted, is guided to the Muḥammadan Reality, thus he multiplies love by love. As he ﷺ has said: 'A man is with the one he loves.'"
These poems are truly transformative, both for the one who recites them and the one who listens, and represent acceptance and invitation to the presence of the Prophet and his household.
This bilingual edition contains the original fully-vowelized Arabic text with an easy-to-read English translation directly following each line, and has been designed for use in regular gatherings of remembrance.

About the author
Salih al-Jafari: Salih al-Jafari (1328-1399 AH / 1910-1979 CE) was a scholar, teacher, and Sufi guide whose life was bound to al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo for nearly half a century. He was born in 1910 in Dongola, in northern Sudan, where he memorized the Qurʾan and grounded himself in Maliki fiqh and the foundational sciences before journeying to Egypt around 1930 to study at al-Azhar. He settled in Cairo for the rest of his life. After teaching at the mosque informally for over a decade, he was officially appointed a teacher in 1946 by the Grand Shaykh of al-Azhar, and he continued instructing there until his death in 1979, more than forty years in all. In his later years he served as imam of the Azhar Mosque and became one of its most celebrated orators, his Friday lessons after the prayer drawing crowds of hundreds. His teaching joined Qurʾanic commentary, hadith, and jurisprudence with the cultivation of the heart. Spiritually he followed the way of Ahmad ibn Idris, the Tariqa Muhammadiyya, a method of teachings and litanies rather than a formal order; after his passing the Jaʿfariyya Ahmadiyya Muhammadiyya order was established in his name and spread across Egypt, Sudan, and beyond. A sayyid descended from the Prophet through al-Husayn, he is remembered through his Qurʾanic teaching and his devotional poetry and salawat, including his Burda al-Hasaniyya wa'l-Husayniyya in praise of the Prophet's family.

Abu Salif Ahmad Ali al-Adani: Abu Salif Ahmad Ali al-Adani is an Italian Muslim scholar of Yemeni origin who has dedicated his scholarly career to preserving and transmitting the classical heritage of Ahl al-Sunna, with a particular emphasis on the existential and spiritual legacy of the Islamic West. His academic formation took him first to Tunis, where he studied with Shaykh al-Nayfar, attended the Bourghiba School for Arabic, and pursued studies at the Zaytuniyyah University before the disruption of its traditional teaching. He subsequently settled in Cairo, where he studied at al-Azhar's Dirasat Khassah program, at Kulliyyah Dar al-Ulum at Cairo University under Dr. Abd al-Sabur Shahin -- head of the linguistics department -- and passed the American University in Cairo examination in Arabic-English translation and simultaneous interpretation. His published translations into English center on the Shadhili Tariqa and classical texts of Islamic spirituality. These include the Tabaqat al-Shadhiliyyah al-Kubra (biographies of prominent Shadhili masters), the Fawa'id min Kunnash of Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq (translated with commentary as Memoirs of a Sufi Master), selections from the diwan of Shaykh Salih al-Ja'fari, and The Secrets of Asceticism (from Imam al-Qurtubi's work on zuhd).
