About The Book

Sharh al-Muqaddimat is a commentary on Imam al-Sanusi's Muqaddimat — the introductory creedal preliminaries that open al-Sanusi's graduated curriculum of Ashari kalam (al-Muqaddimat, al-Sughra al-Sughra, al-Sughra, al-Wusta, al-Kubra). The Muqaddimat themselves establish the rational preliminaries: the division of the rational into the necessary, the impossible, and the possible; the methods of reasoned proof; the relation between reason and revelation. The commentary unpacks each of these for the beginning student and prepares him to enter the Aqida al-Sughra (Umm al-Barahin) proper.

The Sanusi corpus has been the standard aqida curriculum across Maliki North Africa and West Africa for more than five centuries; commentaries on its various texts proliferate across the Maghribi scholarly tradition.

About The Author

Abu Ishaq Ibrahim al-Sarqasti was a Maliki scholar of Ashari aqida active in the late-medieval Maghribi tradition. Definitive biographical details are not fully established; the work is reliably attributed to him through manuscript transmission.
