About The Book

Allah has servants in the world, who are the carriers of Muhammadan light. Through them people receive blessings for the world and the Hereafter. Habib Ali bin Muhammad al-Habashi was from amongst these people. He was renowned for his attachment to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. People around him would regularly see the Prophet in his gatherings and often in his form. No gathering was convened by him except that there was mention of the Prophet’s virtues, praise and characteristics.

His masterpiece, the Mawlid Simt ad-Durar was transmitted to him through Divine inspiration, which he composed in 1910 CE (1328AH). Habib Ali revealed, in praise of this composition, ‘Within the Mawlid is a great secret. Every time I recite it or hear it, I receive new spiritual openings; it is as though it did not actually emanate from my tongue.’ He described this Mawlid “as a manifestation of the state of the Prophet ” and informed us that it is a gift for future generations.

About the Contributor(s)

About the author

Ali al-Habashi: Habib Ali ibn Muhammad al-Habashi rahimahullah (1259-1333 AH / 1843-1915 CE) was one of the most celebrated scholars and poets of the Ba'Alawi Sayyid tradition of the Hadhramaut, Yemen. Born in Seiyun, he received his formative education in the Hadhramaut before traveling to Tarim, a city renowned as the heartland of Ba'Alawi Islamic scholarship. He studied under the foremost Ba'Alawi scholars of his generation and became himself a leading figure in the transmission of their spiritual and legal tradition. His most enduring contribution is Simt al-Durar fi Akhbar Mawlid Khayr al-Bashar, a widely recited mawlid text composed in praise of the Prophet ﷺ, which spread throughout East Africa, Southeast Asia, and the broader Muslim world. He also authored Al-Lata'if al-Arshiyya, a compilation of spiritual litanies and devotional prayers. His legacy is especially felt in communities connected to the Hadhramaut diaspora.

About the translator

Rizwana Sayed: Rizwana Sayed is a contemporary translator and compiler who has rendered into English a body of devotional and instructional texts from the Ba 'Alawi tradition, the Sufi path of the sada (descendants of the Prophet) of Hadramawt in Yemen. Much of her work appears through Sakina Publishing in the United Kingdom, prepared under the guidance of Shaykh Muhammad Sadiq al-'Alawi, and centers on making the litanies, supplications, and poetry of this path accessible to English-speaking readers while preserving the Arabic text alongside.\n\nHer translations include "A Means for the Devout to the Ratib al-Haddad," an abridged commentary on the celebrated litany of Imam 'Abdallah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad, as well as collections of salutations, daily litanies, and the "Qasa'id of Tariqa Sada Ba 'Alawi," a selection of the more celebrated devotional poems of the path presented with translation and introduction. Her two-volume compilation "The Guide to the Path of Righteousness" sets out the history, development, principles, and leading figures of the Ba 'Alawi tariqa, drawing on the counsel of its classical masters such as Imam al-Haddad. Across these works her aim is consistent: to convey the ethics, doctrine, and daily spiritual practice of this Yemeni lineage faithfully for a modern readership. Biographical detail about her beyond this published output is limited.
