About the author

Zafar Ahmad Usmani: Mawlana Zafar Ahmad Usmani rahimahullah was born on 13 Rabi al-Awwal 1310 AH (1892 CE) and grew up under the direct supervision of his maternal uncle, the celebrated Hakim al-Ummah Mawlana Ashraf Ali al-Thanawi. Allah blessed him with a remarkable memory, and he committed the Qur'an to heart at a young age. From the age of seven he studied mathematics, Persian, and Urdu under Mawlana Yasin, who was the father of the later Mufti Shafi. He pursued the Islamic sciences under various teachers, including his uncle al-Thanawi in Thana Bhawan and Kanpur. He subsequently enrolled at Mazahir Ulum where he became a student of the renowned hadith master and gnostic Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri and received his ijaza to teach hadith at only eighteen years of age. He went on to serve as a professor at Mazahir Ulum and at Imdad al-Ulum in Thana Bhawan. Among his many works on the sacred sciences, his greatest contribution is the encyclopedic I'la as-Sunan, a comprehensive defense of Hanafi jurisprudence through hadith evidence.
