Sunan Abi Dawud is one of the six canonical collections (al-Kutub al-Sitta) of Sunni hadith, compiled by Imam Abu Dawud Sulayman b. al-Ashath al-Sijistani over a period of more than twenty years. Its approximately 4,800 carefully-selected hadiths are organised thematically by legal chapter, making it the most focused of the six on ahadith al-ahkam — the hadiths from which Islamic legal rulings are derived. Where Bukhari and Muslim insist on the very highest standard of authentication, Abu Dawud cast his net somewhat wider, including hadiths of merely hasan chain where the legal point was otherwise unsupported — and was transparent about doing so, marking such hadiths for the trained reader.

Abu Dawud's methodological transparency — his celebrated Risala to the people of Makka explaining his criteria — became a foundational document of the science of hadith authentication. Generations of commentators, from al-Khattabi (d. 388 AH) through al-Azimabadi (20th c. CE), have built sustained scholarly engagement upon the text.

About The Author

Imam Abu Dawud Sulayman b. al-Ashath al-Sijistani (202-275 AH / 817-889 CE), born in Sijistan in modern-day eastern Iran, was among the great traveling hadith scholars of the third Islamic century. He studied under Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal in Baghdad and traveled to all the major centers of hadith transmission. Of more than 500,000 hadiths he encountered, he selected fewer than 5,000 for inclusion in his Sunan — the most focused of the Six Books on ahadith al-ahkam (hadith of legal rulings).

سنن أبي داوود أحد الكتب الستّة الكلاسيكية لحديث السنّة، صنَّفها الإمام أبو داوود السجستاني على مدى عشرين عاماً ونيِّف. تَستوعب نحو ٤٨٠٠ حديث منتقى مُرَتَّبة على الأبواب الفقهية، فهي أكثرُ الكتب الستّة تَركيزاً على أحاديث الأحكام التي تُسْتَنْبَط منها الأحكام الفقهية. أَوْسَع أبو داوود دائرة القبول عن البخاري ومسلم، فيُدْخِل الأحاديث الحسنة عند انفراد الباب بها — مع التَّصْريح لقارئه الخبير. ورسالتُه إلى أهل مكّة في بَيان شروطه صارت وثيقةً تأسيسيّة في علم الحديث.

عن المؤلف

الإمام أبو داوود سليمان بن الأشعث السجستاني (٢٠٢-٢٧٥ هـ) من كبار الرحّالين من أهل الحديث في القرن الثالث الهجري. تتلمذ على الإمام أحمد ببغداد وارتحل إلى جميع مراكز رواية الحديث الكبرى. مَيَّز نحو خمسمائة ألف حديث، واختار منها أقلّ من خمسة آلاف لِسُنَنه — أكثر الكتب الستّة عناية بأحاديث الأحكام.
