Tabyin Kadhib al-Muftari is al-Hafiz Ibn Asakir's classical defense of Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Ashari — the foundational figure of the Ashari school of Sunni kalam — against the slanders and misrepresentations that had been raised against him in some quarters by the sixth Islamic century. Working in his characteristic mode as a master of hadith, biography, and historical chronicle, Ibn Asakir reconstructs al-Ashari's actual life and teaching, refutes the false biographical and doctrinal attributions that had circulated, and traces the development of the school through its early masters. The work is one of the most important historical sources for the early Ashari tradition and a foundational defense of Sunni-Ashari orthodoxy.

About The Author

al-Hafiz Abu al-Qasim Ali b. al-Hasan Ibn Asakir al-Dimashqi (499-571 AH / 1105-1176 CE) was the supreme hadith and historical scholar of sixth-century AH Damascus and the author of the monumental Tarikh Madinat Dimashq — a 70-volume biographical history of Damascus that remains one of the largest works in the Sunni historical tradition. He was a Shafii in fiqh, an Ashari in kalam, and a master in the science of hadith.

"تبيين كذب المفتري فيما نُسِب إلى الإمام الأشعري" دفاعُ الحافظ ابن عساكر الدمشقي عن إمام أهل السنّة الأشاعرة أبي الحسن الأشعري — في وجه الإفك والإشاعات التي اخْتُلِقت عليه في بعض الأوساط بحلول القرن السادس الهجري. يَعمل ابن عساكر بطريقته المعتادة كمحدِّث وصاحب تاريخ وتراجم، فيَستعيد سيرةَ الإمام الحقيقية وتعليمَه الصحيح، ويَرُدّ الاتّهامات الباطلة، ويَرْسُم نشأة المدرسة من خلال أئمّتها الأوائل. الكتاب من أهمّ المصادر التاريخية للأشاعرة المبكِّرة، وأحدُ الدفاعات التأسيسية عن أهل السنّة والجماعة الأشاعرة.

الحافظ أبو القاسم علي بن الحسن ابن عساكر الدمشقي (٤٩٩-٥٧١ هـ) إمام أهل الحديث والتاريخ بدمشق في القرن السادس الهجري، وصاحبُ "تاريخ مدينة دمشق" — التاريخ الذي يقع في سبعين مجلداً، ومن أكبر كتب التاريخ السنّي. شافعي في الفقه، أشعري في الكلام، إمام في علم الحديث.
