Tarajim A'lam al-Hanafiyya is Imam Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari's biographical dictionary of the great scholars of the Hanafi school — from the imam himself (Abu Hanifa) through his foundational students (Abu Yusuf, Muhammad al-Shaybani, Zufar) to the major Hanafi figures of every subsequent century. al-Kawthari brings to the work his characteristic erudition: deep familiarity with the primary sources of Hanafi tarajim literature, sharp critical engagement with conflicting reports, and a sustained concern to defend the school against the misrepresentations and slanders that had accumulated in some Sunni biographical works.

About The Author

Imam Muhammad Zahid b. al-Hasan al-Kawthari (1296-1371 AH / 1879-1952 CE) was the foremost late-Ottoman Hanafi-Maturidi scholar of his generation. Born in Caucasia, he served as Deputy Shaykh al-Islam of the Ottoman state in its final years, and after the fall of the empire settled in Cairo where he became the supreme defender of the traditional Sunni-Hanafi-Maturidi-Sufi heritage against the rising Salafi current. His Maqalat — a substantial collection of essays — remains a major contemporary reference for the Sunni position on numerous contested questions.

"تراجم أعلام الحنفية" قاموسُ تراجم الإمام محمد زاهد الكوثري لأَعْلام المذهب الحنفي — من الإمام نفسه (أبي حنيفة) عبر أصحابه التأسيسيين (أبي يوسف ومحمد الشيباني وزُفَر) إلى كبار رجال الحنفية في كلِّ قرن لاحق. يأتي الكوثري إلى الكتاب بدِقّته المُعتادة: عُمْقُ المعرفة بمصادر التراجم الحنفية الأَوْلى، والتعاطي النقدي الحادّ مع الروايات المتعارضة، والحَرَص المُسْتَمِرّ على الدفاع عن المذهب في وجه ما تَراكَم في بعض كتب التراجم السنّية من إشاعات.

عن المؤلف

الإمام محمد زاهد بن الحسن الكوثري (١٢٩٦-١٣٧١ هـ) إمامُ الحنفية الماتريدية في جيله في أواخر العهد العثماني. وُلد بالقُوقاز، وتَوَلَّى نيابةَ شيخ الإسلام للدولة العثمانية في سنواتها الأخيرة، واسْتَوْطَن القاهرةَ بعد سقوط الخلافة، وفيها صار الدفاعَ الأَعْلى عن تراث السنّة والحنفية والماتريدية والصوفية في وجه التيار السلفي الصاعد. مَجموعةُ "مقالاته" مَرْجِعٌ مُعاصِر كبير لِمَواقف السنّة في مسائل كثيرة مُتَنَازَع عليها.
