About the author
Abu Shuja al-Isfahani: Ahmad ibn al-Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Isfahani, known by his kunya Abu Shuja and honored as Qadi, was born in 434 AH / 1042 CE in Basra. He was a Shafiʿi in law, remembered as a jurist, judge, and a man of piety and restraint. For roughly four decades he taught the jurisprudence of Imam al-Shafiʿi in Basra, instructing its people in the rulings of the school, before settling in Madina, where he gave his final years to the service of the Prophet's Mosque. His lasting legacy rests on one short work, the Ghayat al-Ikhtisar, also titled Matn Abi Shuja and Ghayat al-Taqrib. Written as a concise primer covering purification, prayer, fasting, zakat, hajj, transactions, marriage, and the other chapters of Shafiʿi fiqh, it became one of the most widely taught introductory texts in the school. Generations of students have memorized it, and it has drawn a long line of commentaries, among them al-Iqnaʿ of al-Khatib al-Shirbini and the gloss of al-Bayjuri, keeping the matn in active study to the present day. Reports of his death differ sharply. Some place it around 488 AH, others as late as c. 593 AH / 1197 CE, the latter implying an unusually long life. Historians have not settled the question, and the matter is best stated plainly as disputed.
About the translator
Musa Furber: An American scholar, translator, and mufti, Musa Furber was born in Massachusetts and raised in Portland, Oregon. He studied applied linguistics at Portland State University, with an interest in computational linguistics, and embraced Islam before devoting himself to the traditional sciences. He pursued an intensive course of study in Damascus, covering fiqh, hadith, Quranic studies, Prophetic biography, and advanced Arabic grammar, where he received a license to teach the Shafii school, then relocated to Cairo, where he completed a program in the issuing of legal responsa at Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyya and was granted a license to deliver fatwas by senior Egyptian jurists, including Shaykh Ali Gomaa. He works chiefly within the Shafii school. He later earned a master's in public administration from the Dubai School of Government and became a research fellow at the Tabah Foundation in Abu Dhabi, where his research has touched on Islamic ethics and contemporary questions. Furber is best known for rendering accessible classics into clear English: al-Nawawi's al-Tibyan, published as Etiquette with the Quran; Abu Shuja al-Asfahani's The Ultimate Conspectus, the matn known as al-Ghayat wa al-Taqrib; and a translation of al-Juwayni's al-Waraqat with al-Mahalli's commentary in usul al-fiqh. Through his work as author, translator, and publisher, he has made foundational texts of law and worship available to a wide English-reading audience.
