About The Book
The Comprehensive Book (Kitab al-Jami‘) is a work on miscellaneous matters, particularly from the tradition of Madina as transmitted by Imam Malik. It was originally a part of the author’s Mukhtasar of the Mudawwana. There is an extensive treatment of ‘aqida, an examination of the contentious subject of bid’a – innovation in the deen, an exposition of the relative merits of hadiths and ‘amal – the practice of the People of Madina– and an outline of the sira of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as well as a large number of other matters. A great deal of the book is on the noble qualities of character as exemplified by men and women who held to them under extreme political pressure, in both wealth and poverty.

Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani: Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (310-386 AH / 922-996 CE) was the foremost Maliki jurist of his generation and the recognized leader of the school in Qayrawan and across the Maghrib. His command of Maliki fiqh was so complete that scholars called him Malik al-Saghir, the lesser Malik, while others named him the Imam and model of the Malikis of his time. Of Berber descent and settled in Qayrawan, he gathered the rulings of Imam Malik and his companions, taught widely, and corresponded with the jurists of Baghdad, who sought his authorization. Ashʿari in creed, he wrote in defense of Sunni theology against the Muʿtazila and the Qadariyya. He authored more than thirty works, of which two endure above all. His al-Risala, a concise treatise on Maliki law and belief composed for the young, became one of the most widely studied primers in North Africa and beyond. His al-Nawadir wa al-Ziyadat is a monumental encyclopedia of Maliki jurisprudence, gathering and weighing the views of the school, a work whose comprehensiveness drew the praise of Ibn Khaldun in the Muqaddima.
About the translator
Abdassamad Clarke: Abdassamad Clarke is a scholar, translator and author from Carrickfergus in Ulster. He was formally educated in Mathematics and Physics at Edinburgh University and subsequently studied Arabic, tajwid and Islamic sciences in Cairo. He accepted Islam in 1973 at the hands of Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi. In the 1980s he served as secretary to the Imam of the Dublin Mosque, Shaykh Yahya Muhammad al-Hussein, and in the early 1990s served as imam khatib of the Norwich Mosque, where he later served again as imam and teacher. During his time in Dublin he wrote as a freelance journalist for the Irish Times, Irish Press, Sunday Press, The Phoenix, Common Ground and The Aisling, contributing articles on Islam, banking, usury, and alternative currencies. He has translated a number of classical Arabic works, including chapters on the Khulafa ar-Rashidun from as-Suyuti's Tarikh al-Khulafa', al-Nawawi's The Complete Forty Hadith, and The Compendium of Knowledge and Wisdom. He co-authored with the late Abdarrahman I. Doi the second edition of Shariah - Islamic Law. He has served as Dean and Rector of the Muslim Faculty of Advanced Studies in Norwich.
