About The Book
Allah (swt) says in the Qurʾān ﴾Say: We believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us﴿ (2:136). Therefore it is understood by the scholars of Islam that the ‘first obligation’ for a responsible adult is to know Allah. Abū Dāwūd narrates, in his Sunan, that the Messenger of Allah (swt) said, ‘The Jews split into 71 or 72 sects; the Christians split into 71 or 72 sects; and my community will split into 73 sects.’ Consequently, the Muslim community has diligently strived to preserve the correct theology of Islam, and this translated work is one exposition of the Sunni creed.
The author describes this treatise as ‘a work on the subject of what the morally responsible needs to know concerning the foundations of knowledge and its derivatives… along with pointing out some of its evidences in a concise manner’. So the work covers essential tenets of faith concerning Allah (swt), His Messenger (saw), the beatific vision of Allah in the Hereafter, predetermination, the natural predisposition to Islam, His angels and Books, the punishment in the grave, the Resurrection, Paradise and Hell, the law of obeying rulers, miracles of the saints, the Companions, the Prophet’s family and the caliphates of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī (rad).

al-Bayhaqi: Imam Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Bayhaqi rahimahullah (384-458 AH / 994-1066 CE) was the preeminent Shafi'i hadith master of Khurasan in his era, a direct student of al-Hakim al-Nisaburi. Al-Dhahabi praised him as 'Shaykh of Islam' and described him as 'unequalled in his age' (wahid zamanih). He was a central figure in consolidating Ash'ari-Shafi'i theology with the hadith tradition, grounding his theological conclusions in scriptural evidence rather than purely rational argument. His al-Sunan al-Kubra stands as one of the largest hadith compilations in Sunni Islam. His Shu'ab al-Iman is the standard Sunni manual on the branches of faith. His al-Asma' wa al-Sifat is a foundational reference in the Sunni discussion of the divine attributes. His al-I'tiqad wa al-Hidaya ila Sabil al-Rashad is a systematic exposition of Ash'ari creed structured chapter by chapter on Qur'an and authenticated hadith. He also authored important works in Shafi'i jurisprudence.
About the translator
Nasir Abdussalam: Nasir Abdussalam hafidhahullah is an American Muslim scholar, imam, and translator. Born in Chesterfield, Missouri, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he embraced Islam in 2003 while enrolled at Georgia State University, where he was majoring in English with a concentration in rhetoric and composition. Drawn to traditional scholarship, he subsequently spent more than a decade in Jordan pursuing intensive Islamic education. He earned a bachelor's degree in Islamic law and legal theory from the World Islamic Sciences and Education University, while simultaneously engaging in traditional studies of theology (aqida), hadith, Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir), and Shafi'i jurisprudence. Upon returning to the United States, he took up the role of imam at the Islamic Association of West Virginia and founded Saladin Islamic Seminary. He has also taught privately and for Islamic American University. His translation output focuses on foundational theological and hadith sciences texts: he has translated Imam al-Ghazali's The Forty Principles of the Religion and The Foundations of Belief, The Creed of Imam Bayhaqi, Qatf al-Azhar (a collection of mass-transmitted reports), and Ibn Kathir's Ikhtisar 'Ulum al-Hadith, all published by Turath Publishing.
