About the author
Muhammad ibn al-Habib: Muhammad ibn al-Habib al-Amghari al-Idrisi al-Hasani, 1876 to 1972 CE, was a Moroccan scholar and spiritual master of the Shadhili-Darqawi path. Born in Fez of sharifian descent, his lineage tracing back to ʿAli and Hasan, he memorized the Qurʾan and trained in the Islamic sciences, including Maliki fiqh and the texts of the Maliki school such as the Mukhtasar of Khalil, studying with scholars connected to the Qarawiyyin. Authorized to guide in the Shadhili-Darqawi tariqa, he taught the essentials of the religion across Morocco and Algeria, and through his successors, among them Abdalqadir as-Sufi and Abdalhaqq Bewley, his way reached Britain, France, and America. He is best remembered for his Diwan of Sufi qasidas, his wird and litanies still recited among his followers, and for his Ramadan discourses of Qurʾanic tafsir, recorded shortly before his death and later translated. He died near Blida, Algeria, en route to hajj in January 1972, and was reburied in his zawiya in Meknes, where his order endures.
