This essay, originally published in Arabic under the title Al-Tahqiq al-Bahir fi Ma'na al-Iman bi al-Yawm al-Akhir ~ (A Profound Analysis of the Meaning of Belief in the Last Day), investigates the concept of faith (iman) in God and the Last Day within the Islamic Tradition, specifically engaging with a contemporary heretical claim that seeks to decouple belief in Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from the necessary prerequisites for salvation.

About The Book

The Finality of Islam & The Rebuttal of Perennialism : This essay, originally published in Arabic under the title Al-Tahqiq al-Bahir fi Ma'na al-Iman bi al-Yawm al-Akhir ~ (A Profound Analysis of the Meaning of Belief in the Last Day), investigates the concept of faith (iman) in God and the Last Day within the Islamic Tradition, specifically engaging with a contemporary heretical claim that seeks to decouple belief in Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from the necessary prerequisites for salvation.

The proponent of this claim promotes the 'Unity of Religions' (tawhid al-adyan) and asserts that belief in God and the Last Day alone suffices for divine reward on the Day of Judgement, irrespective of belief in the Prophethood of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. To legitimise his assertion, he misuses the Qur'anic verse : " Surely those who have believed, and those of Jewry, the Christians and the Sabians - whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, and works righteousness, they shall have their reward with their Lord. and there shall be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve. " [2:62].

Shaykh 'Abd-Allah al-Ghumari, may Allah have mercy upon his soul, presents a robust and comprehensive rebuttal of this heterodoxy. By analysing classical exegesis (tafsir) of the aforementioned Qur'anic verse along with other authoritative Islamic sources, including Prophetic traditions and scholarly consensus (ijma'), he demonstrates the centrality of belief in Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, alongside belief in God and the Last Day as a cornerstone of Islamic faith and an indispensable prerequisite for salvation.

About the author

Abd Allah al-Ghumari: Abd Allah al-Ghumari, rahimahullah - full name Shaykh Abu al-Fadl Abd Allah al-Siddiq al-Ghumari - was a distinguished hadith scholar, jurist, and theologian of the twentieth century. Born in 1328 AH (1910 CE) in the city of Tangier, Morocco, he was the son of the grand scholar Abu Abd Allah Shams al-Din Muhammad and brother to the hadith master al-Hafidh Abu al-Fayd Ahmad al-Siddiq al-Ghumari and Shaykh Abd al-Aziz al-Siddiq al-Ghumari. At his father's instruction, he traveled to Fez to study at the University of al-Qarawiyyin, where he studied the major classical texts under the renowned scholars of his time. During his stay in Fez he encountered al-Sayyid Muhammad ibn Jafar al-Kattani and received authorization to narrate from al-Sayyid Mahdi al-Azuzi. He subsequently continued his studies at al-Azhar University in Egypt. He is credited with having had over fifty teachers and is thought to have compiled over sixty scholarly works.

About the translator

Amjad Mahmood: Amjad Mahmood is a contemporary translator and annotator of classical Islamic texts, working chiefly with Heritage Press in the United Kingdom. His renderings give English readers careful access to works of Sufism and Hanafi law, with attention to footnoting, source references, and the Qurʾan and Sunna citations embedded in the original texts. Among his best known works is The Refinement of Souls, a translation of Taj al-ʿArus al-Hawi li-Tahdhib al-Nufus by Ibn ʿAtaʾ Allah al-Iskandari, the Shadhili master. The book gathers spiritual instructions, aphorisms, and intimate discourses with the Divine, treating themes such as repentance, the effects of sin, the struggle against the lower self, envy, and reliance on divine planning. Mahmood has also translated devotional and juristic primers, notably the "A Believer's Guide" series on prayer, fasting, and zakat, which render treatises by scholars including Muhammad Hisham Burhani and Ahmad ibn Zayni Dahlan, and he has worked on creedal material associated with the Hanafi and Maturidi tradition. Working from within the traditional Sunni scholarly current, his translations are valued for plain, faithful English and useful annotation rather than paraphrase. Detailed biographical information about him is not widely published; he is known primarily through his body of translation work.
