The present work al-Kaba'ir is one of the most important ones Imam adh-Dhahabi wrote for ordinary readers. In it he deals with themes which are of great interest and benefit to them in both their deen and matters of this world, explaining matters which are less easy to understand in other books of knowledge written for specialist scholars and researchers.
In al-Kaba'ir, adh-Dhahabi adopts the approach of a warning guide who seeks to correct people as regards their beliefs and lives and presents his material in easily understood language and in a clear attractive style. He avoids complexity, obscurity, and artifices and his book is a useful source for speakers and preachers alike. By his words, he awakens the heedless and bewildered, chides rebels and deviants, and guides those who desire to travel the path of Allah to truth and to what is correct.
The major sins are those acts which have been forbidden by Allah in the Qur'an and by His Messenger (SAW) in the Sunnah (the practice of the Prophet), and which have been made clear by the actions of the first righteous generation of Muslims, the Companions of the Prophet (SAW)
There is some difference of opinion among scholars in this regard. Some say these major sins are seven, and in support of their position they quote the tradition: 'Avoid the seven noxious things'- and after having said this, the Prophet (SAW) mentioned them: 'associating anything with Allah; magic; killing one whom Allah has declared inviolate without a just cause, consuming the property of an orphan, devouring usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers but indiscreet.' - (Bukhari and Muslim)

Adh-Dhahabi: Imam Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi rahimahullah (673-748 AH / 1274-1348 CE), full name Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Qaymaz al-Dhahabi al-Shafi'i, was born in Damascus, where his family had lived since the time of his grandfather Uthman. He was a towering Shafi'i hadith master, historian, biographer, and an authority in the canonical Qur'anic readings. He is considered among the foremost critics in the science of evaluating hadith narrators (ilm al-asma wa'l-rijal). Among his most important teachers was a woman scholar, Zaynab bint Umar ibn al-Kindi, whom he studied under in Baalbek. He authored nearly a hundred works, his most celebrated being: Mizan al-I'tidal fi Naqd al-Rijal, Siyar A'lam al-Nubala, Al-Mughni fi'l-Du'afa, and Tadhkirat al-Huffaz. He lost his sight two years before his death in 748 AH / 1348 CE, and was survived by his sons Abd Allah and Abu Hurayra Abd al-Rahman, the latter of whom transmitted his father's works to hadith masters including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani.

Aisha Bewley: Aisha Bewley (b. 1948 CE) is one of the most prolific and respected translators of classical Arabic Islamic literature into English. Born in the United States, she earned a BA in French and an MA in Near Eastern languages at the University of California, Berkeley, and undertook further study at the American University in Cairo. She embraced Islam in 1968 and has since devoted more than four decades to rendering the texts of the Islamic tradition into clear, accessible English. Her best-known work is The Noble Qur'an, a translation of the meanings of the Qur'an produced with her husband, Abdalhaqq Bewley, and first published in 1999. Among her landmark translations are the Muwatta' of Imam Malik ibn Anas (1989), a foundational early collection of hadith and Maliki fiqh, and the multi-volume Tafsir of al-Qurtubi (2003 onward). Her wider output spans creed, law, and Prophetic biography, including abridgements and renderings of works such as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's writing on the soul after death and classical descriptions of the noble character and appearance of the Prophet, peace be upon him. WorldCat records her as author or translator of dozens of works across many editions, and in 2023 she was named Muslim Woman of the Year by The Muslim 500, which recognizes the world's most influential Muslims. Her translations are valued for fidelity to the Arabic and readable English, and remain in steady use among English-speaking students of the tradition.
