Hafiz of Shiraz: Shams al-Din Muhammad Hafiz of Shiraz rahimahullah (c. 1315-1390 CE / c. 715-792 AH) is universally regarded as the supreme master of the Persian ghazal and one of the greatest poets of the Islamic literary tradition. Born and raised in Shiraz, Persia (present-day Iran), he is said to have memorized the Qur'an, which earned him the honorary title Hafiz. His major work, the Diwan-i Hafiz, comprises hundreds of ghazals distinguished by their multi-layered imagery, mystical depth, and lyric beauty. In his poetry, themes of divine love, spiritual yearning, beauty, and the wine of the soul combine to create a unique mystical voice that has continued to inspire readers across the Persian-speaking world and beyond for more than six centuries. His tomb in Shiraz, the Hafezieh, remains a site of visitation and veneration. He is counted among the most translated poets in Islamic literary history.
About the translator
Jeffrey Einboden: Jeffrey Einboden is Associate Professor in the English Department at Northern Illinois University. His scholarly work explores the crossroads of Islamic literatures and the Western Romantic tradition. He is the author of 'Nineteenth-Century U.S. Literature in Middle Eastern Languages,' a study examining the reception of celebrated American authors through Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew translation. His research has appeared in journals including Middle Eastern Literatures, Translation and Literature, and the Journal of Qur'anic Studies. His article 'The Genesis of Weltliteratur' was named in 2006 as one of the '100 seminal articles' published by Oxford University Press Journals over the preceding century. He is also the author of 'Islam and Romanticism: Muslim Currents from Goethe to Emerson' (OP015) and the translator of 'The Tangled Braid: Ninety-Nine Poems by Hafiz of Shiraz' (FV091).
