About The Book

Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti composed the Work of Day and Night ('Amal al-yawm wa'l-layla) as a guide to correct conduct and worship in accordance with the example of the Prophet and the Pious Predecessors. This book contains some of the most beautiful prayers in Islamic devotional literature, and Imam Suyuti has provided guidance about nearly every situation that one is likely to encounter day-to-day.

In it the reader will find:

  • the prayers said upon awakening, before eating and when dressing;
  • the acts carried out at various times of the day, and between prayers;
  • the supplications recited in times of distress as well as of intimacy with God; and much else.

A special section is dedicated to prayers that are recommended for reading at times of need due to their widely recognized protective qualities. Work of Day and Night is invaluable for learning the Sunna of the Prophet and integrating it into one's life as Suyuti took great care to explain precisely how to perform each of the daily practices in accordance with the example of the Prophet Muhammad.

It is hoped that this bilingual volume will enable a wider English-speaking audience to access one of the treasures of traditional Islamic knowledge and practice, and that it will provide Muslim readers with a source of inspiration in everyday life. A selection of the most beautiful and useful prayers has been transliterated and included in an appendix so that all worshipers may benefit by reciting them regardless of Arabic ability. There is also a glossary of the most important religious terms.

About the Contributor(s)

About the author

Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti: One of the most prolific scholars in Islamic history, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (849-911 AH / 1445-1505 CE), whose full name was Abu al-Fadl ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Khudayri al-Suyuti, was born and raised in Cairo. Orphaned in childhood, he memorized the entire Qurʾan by the age of eight and went on to study under many of the leading teachers of Mamluk Egypt, gathering ijazas from scholars across the Muslim world. He was a Shafiʿi in law and Ashʿari in creed, and at one point regarded himself as the mujaddid, the renewer, of his age. Biographers credit him with close to six hundred works, from brief epistles to large reference compilations, spanning tafsir, hadith, fiqh, Arabic grammar and rhetoric, history, and more. He is best remembered as co-author of Tafsir al-Jalalayn, completing the concise verse-by-verse Qurʾanic commentary begun by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli, and for al-Itqan fi ʿUlum al-Qurʾan, a landmark survey of the Qurʾanic sciences. Among his other enduring works are al-Jami al-Saghir, a much-used collection of Prophetic hadith, Tadrib al-Rawi on hadith methodology, Tarikh al-Khulafaʾ on the caliphs, and Husn al-Muhadara on the history of Egypt. In his forties he withdrew from teaching and public life, secluding himself on Rawda Island on the Nile to write, where he remained until his death in Cairo in 911 AH.

About the translator

Rashad Jameer: Rashad Jameer is a contemporary translator of classical Islamic texts, based in Toronto, Canada. He recommitted to his faith in his early twenties and took up the study of Arabic, the Quran, hadith, and Hanafi and Maliki fiqh with scholars in Canada, before continuing his training in Cairo, Egypt, and in Tarim, in the Hadramawt valley of Yemen. He is best known for rendering works of devotion and hadith into accessible English, frequently in bilingual editions that set the Arabic text alongside the translation and add explanatory notes and appendices. Much of his published work centers on love and reverence for the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. He translated Imam Yusuf al-Nabhani's collection on the virtues of the Prophet and his nation, a gathering of forty narrations, as well as related titles on the merits of sending prayers upon the Prophet and on the unique qualities of the Prophet and his community. He also translated Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's compilation of prophetic practices and prayers, published as The Work of Day and Night, and a selection from Imam al-Sabuni's Safwat al-Tafasir covering Surat al-Waqia. His translations have appeared with publishers including Wasila Press and the Islamic Texts Society. Alongside this work he teaches Islamic studies at several mosques in Toronto, making the traditional sources available to English-speaking readers and worshippers.
