About the author
Hena Khan: Hena Khan is a Pakistani American author of children's and middle-grade books, widely loved for stories that place Muslim families, faith, and culture warmly at the center of the page. She grew up in Rockville, Maryland, where she still lives with her family, and recalls rarely seeing her own Pakistani American Muslim life reflected in the books of her childhood, a gap her work has helped to fill. After earning an MA in International Affairs from George Washington University, she worked as a writer and editor before turning to children's literature. Her picture books include Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book of Colors, Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets: A Muslim Book of Shapes, Night of the Moon: A Muslim Holiday Story, Under My Hijab, and It's Ramadan, Curious George, titles that introduce young readers to Ramadan, Eid, prayer, and Islamic art in an approachable way. In middle-grade fiction she is known for Amina's Voice and its sequel Amina's Song, as well as More to the Story and the Zara's Rules series. Amina's Voice was named a best book of 2017 by The Washington Post, Kirkus Reviews, and NPR, while Amina's Song won the 2022 Asian/Pacific American Award for Children's Literature. Across more than two decades of writing, her recurring themes are friendship, community, and family.
About the illustrator
Aaliya Jaleel: Aaliya Jaleel is a Sri-Lankan American illustrator, designer, and visual development artist whose bright, pastel-toned work celebrates Muslim childhood and identity. Born in Sri Lanka, she moved to the United States as a young child, living first in the Boston area before her family settled in the Dallas area of Texas. Encouraged toward crafts and painting from an early age, she began drawing seriously in her early teens and posted her art online, where it caught the attention of industry professionals while she was still a student. She went on to study animation at the University of Texas at Dallas, in its School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication. Her best-known work is in children's picture books. She illustrated Under My Hijab (Lee and Low Books), written by Hena Khan, a gentle story of a girl who notices the women in her life wearing the hijab in ways that reflect their own personalities. She also illustrated Muslim Girls Rise: Inspirational Champions of Our Time (Salaam Reads, Simon and Schuster), written by Saira Mir, which profiles nineteen modern Muslim women through short biographies and vibrant portraits. She has gone on to illustrate numerous children's titles featuring Muslim characters. Her style, marked by warm color, floral motifs, and lively characters, has made her a recognizable voice in contemporary Muslim children's publishing.
