About
Sayyid Abbas b. Alawi al-Maliki al-Hasani rahimahullah (1320-1391 AH / 1902-1971 CE) was a senior sayyid scholar of Makka from the Maliki school, living through the transition of the city from the late Ottoman period to the early Saudi era. He is the father of Sayyid Muhammad b. Alawi al-Maliki, the celebrated Meccan teacher and hadith master who taught multiple subsequent generations of Muslim students - the father and son together representing one of the most significant Maliki-Sufi scholarly houses of twentieth-century Makka. His book Hakadha Kanu - Kitab Thaqafi an Tarikh Makka al-Mukarrama is a cultural and historical memoir of Makka's traditional life, written from the perspective of a senior Hijazi sayyid who witnessed that world firsthand. It documents the manners of the merchant class, the relations of the Ashraf with pilgrims, the practices of mosque and madrasa, popular devotion, the seasonal rhythms of Hajj and Ramadan, and the foods, dress, and languages of the holy city before its modern transformation.
