About
Abdul Rahman Hassan Azzam (1893-1976), widely known as Azzam Pasha, was an Egyptian diplomat, statesman, and Islamic intellectual whose career spanned the formative decades of Arab nationalism and independent statehood. He held a long career as an ambassador and parliamentarian in Egypt before rising to international prominence as the first Secretary-General of the Arab League, a position he held from the League's founding on 22 March 1945 until September 1952. As Secretary-General, he was one of the architects of pan-Arab political cooperation at a pivotal moment in the history of the Arab world. He combined Egyptian nationalism with a broader pan-Arab idealism, viewpoints he did not regard as contradictory, and was among the most passionate opponents of the partition of Palestine. His intellectual legacy also encompasses his writings on Islamic civilization and the message of the Prophet, reflected in his work The Eternal Message of Muhammad.
