Saladin : The Triumph of the Sunni Revival
Description
About The Book
Narrating the life of Saladin, this groundbreaking biography places the 12th-century sultan of Egypt and Syria in historical context against the backdrop of the 10th- and 11th-century Sunni Revival, a powerful sweeping intellectual renaissance that transformed every field of Islamic thought.
Islamic scholar A. R. Azzam contends that Saladin was not just the brilliant military commander of popular imagination but that his true greatness lay in his political and spiritual vision.
Famous for driving the crusaders out of Jerusalem and for his bitter war of attrition with Richard the Lionheart, and fabled for his chivalry and generosity, he became the most powerful man in the Islamic empire, but died penniless, without enough money to line his coffin.
In telling his fascinating and complex story, this study introduces readers to Saladin’s society and the men with whom he surrounded himself, analyzing the vital religious, military, intellectual, and administrative roles they played.

About the author
Abdul Rahman Hassan Azzam: Abdul Rahman Hassan Azzam (1893-1976), widely known as Azzam Pasha, was an Egyptian diplomat, statesman, and Islamic intellectual whose career spanned the formative decades of Arab nationalism and independent statehood. He held a long career as an ambassador and parliamentarian in Egypt before rising to international prominence as the first Secretary-General of the Arab League, a position he held from the League's founding on 22 March 1945 until September 1952. As Secretary-General, he was one of the architects of pan-Arab political cooperation at a pivotal moment in the history of the Arab world. He combined Egyptian nationalism with a broader pan-Arab idealism, viewpoints he did not regard as contradictory, and was among the most passionate opponents of the partition of Palestine. His intellectual legacy also encompasses his writings on Islamic civilization and the message of the Prophet, reflected in his work The Eternal Message of Muhammad.
