About
Shaykh Ahmad ibn Ahmad al-Sajai al-Azhari rahimahullah (d. 1197 AH / 1783 CE) was an Egyptian Shafii scholar of al-Azhar who distinguished himself in Arabic grammar and the commentary tradition on classical matn literature. He composed numerous commentaries spanning Arabic linguistic texts and devotional works, leaving a body of work characteristic of the late Azhari scholarly tradition. His most celebrated grammatical contribution is his Hashiya on Sharh Ibn Aqil ala Alfiyyat Ibn Malik, which stands as a standard reference for students of advanced Arabic morphosyntax. On the devotional side, he wrote a commentary on al-Wazifa al-Zarruqiyya, the morning and evening litany composed by Imam Ahmad Zarruq al-Fasi (d. 899 AH), the foremost authority of the Shadhili tradition in the Maghrib. The commentary proceeds section by section - through Quranic passages, the Throne Verse, the Closing of al-Baqara, the two refuge suras, prayers on the Prophet ﷺ, and formulae of remembrance - explaining the textual provenance of each element, the transmitted merits, and the inner courtesies befitting the reciter.
