About
Abu al-Abbas Ahmad b. Ahmad Zarruq al-Fasi al-Barnusi (846-899 AH / 1442-1493 CE), rahimahullah, was one of the most distinctive scholarly figures in the late medieval Maghribi tradition - a Maliki jurist, Ashari theologian, and Shadhili Sufi master who made the critical evaluation of Sufi practice by the standards of shari'a his defining intellectual project. Known as Muhtasib al-Sufiyya (the auditor of the Sufis), he produced more than fifty commentaries on the Hikam of Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari alone, approaching each aphorism through the lens of the Qur'an, Sunna, and Maliki fiqh. His Qawaid al-Tasawwuf, comprising 217 foundational principles for the Sufi path, remains among the most authoritative systematizations of Sunni Sufism. His spiritual chain - the Zarruqiyya - became a foundational sub-order within the Shadhili tradition. Al-Turar wa al-Hawashi ala al-Hikam al-Ataiyya represents one of his earliest engagements with the Hikam text.
