al-Turar wa al-Hawashi is Imam Ahmad Zarruq's marginal commentary on the Hikam of Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari — written by one of the most rigorous Shadhili masters of the Maghribi tradition, the scholar who composed more than fifty distinct commentaries on the Hikam over the course of his life. Zarruq's distinctive contribution is his strict measuring of each hikma against the standards of the Quran, the Sunna, and the Sunni jurisprudence — what he called the principle of taqyid al-tasawwuf bi-l-Shar (binding tasawwuf to the sacred law). The Turar are among his earlier marginalia on the matn, capturing the Hikam in this characteristic mode.

About The Author

Imam Ahmad b. Ahmad Zarruq al-Fasi (846-899 AH / 1442-1493 CE) was a Maghribi Maliki jurist and Shadhili Sufi master of unusual rigour, known as Muhtasib al-Sufiyya (the auditor of the Sufis) for his sustained programme of measuring the Sufi tradition against the standards of the Sunni Shari'a. His Qawaid al-Tasawwuf (217 foundational rules of Sufism) is among his most influential works, and his line of practice — the Zarruqiyya — became a foundational sub-current of the Shadhili order.

"الطرر والحواشي على الحكم العطائية" تعليقاتُ الإمام أحمد زرّوق على حكم ابن عطاء الله — صاحب أحد أشدّ الأنظار صرامةً في تَقْليد الشاذلية المغربية، الذي صنَّف على الحكم وحدها أكثر من خمسين شرحاً مختلفاً طوال حياته. وخصوصيّةُ زرّوق هي قياسُ كلِّ حكمةٍ بميزان الكتاب والسنّة والفقه السنّي — ما عبَّر عنه بـ"تقييد التصوّف بالشرع". والطُّرر هذه من تعليقاته الأولى على المتن.

عن المؤلف

الإمام أحمد بن أحمد زرّوق الفاسي (٨٤٦-٨٩٩ هـ) فقيه مالكي وصوفي شاذلي مغربي، عُرف بـ"مُحتسب الصوفية" لمَنْهَجه في قياس التصوّف بميزان الشريعة. وقواعدُه في التصوف (٢١٧ قاعدة) من أعظم آثاره، وعليها قامت "الطريقة الزرّوقية" فرعاً تأسيسياً من فروع الشاذلية.
