About
Imam Abu Abd Allah Muhammad Ibn Abbad al-Nafzi al-Rundi rahimahullah (733-792 AH / 1333-1390 CE) was an Andalusian-Moroccan Maliki scholar and master of the Shadhili Sufi path who served as preacher (khatib) at the Qarawiyyin mosque in Fez - among the most prestigious religious positions in the medieval Maghrib. His commentary al-Tanbih Sharh al-Hikam al-Ataiyya holds the distinction of being historically the first major scholarly commentary on the Hikam of Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari, composed in the generation following the author. Together with Ibn Ajiba's Iqaz al-Himam, it forms one of the two classical reference commentaries on the Hikam. A distinctive feature of Ibn Abbad's approach is his integration of the Hikam within the broader Shadhili heritage, his attention to the connections between individual aphorisms, and his sustained engagement with the philosophical questions the text raises. His celebrated Rasa'il - a collection of letters of spiritual guidance to his disciples - is regarded as one of the finest examples of practical Sufi correspondence in classical Sunni literature.
