al-Tanbih is Imam Ibn Ibad al-Rondi's foundational commentary on the Hikam of Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari — historically the first major scholarly commentary on the matn, written within a century of the matn's composition. Together with Ibn Ajiba's later Iqaz al-Himam, the Tanbih is one of the two indispensable commentaries on the Hikam. Ibn Ibad's contribution is distinctive in its careful integration of the Hikam with the wider corpus of Shadhili teaching, in his attention to the relations among individual aphorisms, and in his sustained engagement with the philosophical questions that the Hikam raise.

About The Author

Imam Abu Abd Allah Muhammad Ibn Ibad al-Nafzi al-Rondi (733-792 AH / 1333-1390 CE) was an Andalusian-Moroccan Maliki scholar and Shadhili Sufi master who served as preacher at the Qarawiyyin in Fez. Beyond al-Tanbih, his celebrated Rasail (correspondence with his Sufi disciples) is one of the most beautiful collections of practical spiritual letters in classical Sunni literature.

"التنبيه" شرحُ الإمام ابن عباد النفزي الرندي على حكم ابن عطاء الله السكندري — تاريخياً أوّل الشروح العلمية الكبرى على المتن، كُتب في القرن الذي يَلي عَصْر المؤلف. ومع شرح ابن عجيبة "إيقاظ الهمم"، يَشْكُلان معاً الشرحَيْن الكلاسيكيَّيْن المعتمدَيْن على الحكم. وخصوصيّةُ ابن عباد هي الدمج المُحْكَم للحكم مع تراث الشاذلية الأَوسع، والانتباه إلى الروابط بين الحكم الفردية، والاشتغال المُطْرَد بالأسئلة الفلسفية التي تَطْرَحها الحكم.

عن المؤلف

الإمام أبو عبد الله محمد ابن عباد النفزي الرندي (٧٣٣-٧٩٢ هـ) عالم مالكي أندلسي-مغربي وشيخ شاذلي خَدَم خَطيباً بجامع القَرَويين بفاس. له بالإضافة إلى التنبيه "الرسائل" المشهورة في مُراسَلاته لمريديه — من أَجْمَل المجموعات الرسائلية الصوفية العملية في الأدب السنّي الكلاسيكي.
