About
Iyad ibn Musa al-Yahsubi (476–544 AH / 1083–1149 CE), honored across the Muslim world as Qadi Iyad, was among the foremost scholars of the Islamic West during the era of the Murabitun (Almoravids). He was born in Ceuta to a family of Andalusian origin that had settled in the Maghrib. From a young age he was immersed in the sciences of his day, mastering hadith, Maliki jurisprudence, Arabic language, and history, and gathering narrations from many teachers, including the hadith scholar Abu Ali al-Ghassani. He was Maliki in law and Ashʿari in creed.

Appointed a judge while still young, he served as qadi of his native Ceuta and later of Granada in Andalus, earning a lasting reputation for learning and integrity. His scholarship spans several enduring works. Best known is al-Shifaʾ bi-Taʿrif Huquq al-Mustafa, a tender and exhaustive treatment of the Prophet Muhammad's virtues, character, rights, and miracles, which became one of the most copied and commented-upon devotional books in Islamic history. In Maliki studies he composed Tartib al-Madarik, a major biographical survey of the scholars of the school, alongside works on hadith and creed. With the rise of the Almohads his standing came under pressure, and he died in Marrakesh in 544 AH, remembered as a pillar of Maliki and prophetic learning.
