About The Book

Ever since he preached his first sermon, people from the world over have fallen in love with the Prophet of Islam ﷺ. As a community our quest has been how to capture this love, teach this love, pass on this love and become this love.

These inquiries and many more related to them are the core questions that drove Qadi iyad to compile his famous ash-Shifa' to serve, above all, as a manual of love and devotion to our beloved Messenger ﷺ. Since it was first written nearly 900 years ago, this book has been universally accepted by the ummah as one of the greatest celebrations of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

It teaches us what are beliefs about the Prophet ﷺ a constitute, what he represents both metaphysically and physically and the necessary rights and responsibilities we owe him as his followers. Since the original is a lengthy book, we are pleased to provide here a suitable abridgement in English.

About the Contributor(s)

About the author

Iyad ibn Musa al-Yahsubi: Iyad ibn Musa al-Yahsubi (476–544 AH / 1083–1149 CE), honored across the Muslim world as Qadi Iyad, was among the foremost scholars of the Islamic West during the era of the Murabitun (Almoravids). He was born in Ceuta to a family of Andalusian origin that had settled in the Maghrib. From a young age he was immersed in the sciences of his day, mastering hadith, Maliki jurisprudence, Arabic language, and history, and gathering narrations from many teachers, including the hadith scholar Abu Ali al-Ghassani. He was Maliki in law and Ashʿari in creed. Appointed a judge while still young, he served as qadi of his native Ceuta and later of Granada in Andalus, earning a lasting reputation for learning and integrity. His scholarship spans several enduring works. Best known is al-Shifaʾ bi-Taʿrif Huquq al-Mustafa, a tender and exhaustive treatment of the Prophet Muhammad's virtues, character, rights, and miracles, which became one of the most copied and commented-upon devotional books in Islamic history. In Maliki studies he composed Tartib al-Madarik, a major biographical survey of the scholars of the school, alongside works on hadith and creed. With the rise of the Almohads his standing came under pressure, and he died in Marrakesh in 544 AH, remembered as a pillar of Maliki and prophetic learning.

About the translator

Aisha Bewley: Aisha Bewley (b. 1948 CE) is one of the most prolific and respected translators of classical Arabic Islamic literature into English. Born in the United States, she earned a BA in French and an MA in Near Eastern languages at the University of California, Berkeley, and undertook further study at the American University in Cairo. She embraced Islam in 1968 and has since devoted more than four decades to rendering the texts of the Islamic tradition into clear, accessible English. Her best-known work is The Noble Qur'an, a translation of the meanings of the Qur'an produced with her husband, Abdalhaqq Bewley, and first published in 1999. Among her landmark translations are the Muwatta' of Imam Malik ibn Anas (1989), a foundational early collection of hadith and Maliki fiqh, and the multi-volume Tafsir of al-Qurtubi (2003 onward). Her wider output spans creed, law, and Prophetic biography, including abridgements and renderings of works such as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's writing on the soul after death and classical descriptions of the noble character and appearance of the Prophet, peace be upon him. WorldCat records her as author or translator of dozens of works across many editions, and in 2023 she was named Muslim Woman of the Year by The Muslim 500, which recognizes the world's most influential Muslims. Her translations are valued for fidelity to the Arabic and readable English, and remain in steady use among English-speaking students of the tradition.
