About
Shaykh Khalid ibn Abd Allah al-Azhari rahimahullah (838-905 AH / 1434-1499 CE) was an Egyptian scholar and leading specialist in Arabic grammar who held a teaching position at al-Azhar during the late Mamluk period. He is regarded as one of the foremost grammarians of his era, and his Hashiya on Sharh Ibn Aqil ala Alfiyyat Ibn Malik remains a standard reference for advanced students of Arabic morphosyntax. He also wrote Sharh al-Ajurrumiyya, a commentary on the foundational prose primer composed by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Dawud al-Sanhaji, known as Ibn Ajurrum, in the seventh century AH in Fez. The Ajurrumiyya establishes the first principles of Arabic grammar in concise prose, covering the definition of speech, the categories of word, grammatical cases, the nominatives, accusatives, and genitives, and the particles of nasb and jazm. Al-Azhari's commentary unpacks each ruling for the beginner with examples and clarification, making it a widely used pedagogical text.
